She found out today that she has to have her right knee completely replaced. They are going to do the right knee for now. Possibly the left knee after. Depending on how she does with the first knee replacement. Anyone have any experience with this? Know anyone that has done this? What was their prognosis? Any side effects?

It's not a big deal these days. Most people after rehab wonder why they waited so long

She sounds kneedy!
JK. My 80 year old mother has her knee replaced this year. Just make sure to do the PT and she should be OK.

My grandma (no pics) who is 78 had both of her knees replaced at the same time a couple of years ago. No problems. Just recently had both shoulders replaced (but not at the same time). Before long I'm gonna have a brand new grandma!

knee and hip replacements are unbelieveably common...three guys who work with me have had joint replacements...

honestly, the surgery is routine, but the rehab is pretty tough...they will have her up and walking the same day as the surgery and every day after that...

the positive is that when people go in for replacements, they are usually in pretty bad constant pain and once the surgery pain passes, they are just tickled at how good they feel...

I never heard of any of them having any complications at all and all said they should have had the surgery years earlier...

My mom has had knee replacement. It really can go well IF she goes through rehab correctly. My mom didn't do as much as she needed to and has problems sometimes...but these aren't really that big of a deal any more.

My mom has a titanium knee now...I joke with her that when she dies, I am going to take her knee and make a driver out of it (she doesn't think it is as funny as I do)

Yeah, I know a guy that's had both knees and shoulders replaced. He's just laid up for a little while and has said the same thing.

Seen plenty of folks have knee replacements. Much easier than an ACL repair to say the least.

Buddy of mine is an NP for an orthopedic surgeon, showed me some in-surgery vids--very traumatic shite, amazing people are rehabbing a few weeks later. Your moms should be fine.

She should understand that the rehab process will be long and arduous as well as painful. Past that, she should enjoy more freedom of movement and less pain than before. I had several older relatives go through this when they were 75 + . Some did well and others said never again.

Oh, and fix your thread title so it will be clear.

My mom had one done about five years ago. Went well, but now in the late 60's, the other one is going. Not much down time, maybe a month to get strength back. These things caused a lot of problems with some metal detectors, but not as much with new security checks.
