I hate to keep seeing this with people losing their jobs. I get that's how the industry works and when they aren't working on a project they lay people off now but it still sucks. Hopefully other companies pick them up like many did for irrational.

The gaming industry seems like a terrible place to work. Layoffs at any time combined with shitty hours during crunch time.

SCEA can confirm that we have completed a reduction in workforce at Santa Monica Studio. This is a result of a cycle of resource re-alignment against priority growth areas within SCE WWS. We do not take these decisions lightly. However, sometimes it is necessary to make changes to better serve the future projects of the studio. We have offered outplacement services and severance packages to ease transition for those impacted.

They've cleared sacked the coffee guys.

Trimming the fat on a game that didn't develop well is my guess.

They just moved to a bigger location and hired a bunch of new people, and are still hiring.

Likely that new project didn't meet their standards or expectations and let some of them working on it go.

I hope that's the case. It does sound like they canceled a project but we don't know how many people, what project, or how far into development they were.

I'm sure some project got cancelled, but it wasn't one we knew about. Have to remember that there are dozens of games canned each year for all kinds of reasons. Considering the investments made in this studio (moved into brand new, larger offices just 2 months ago), I don't think there's any reason to be worried.

Considering you're reliant on middle school to 20 something males for your market, there's never going to be a ton of stability unless you hit it big. Not to mention that the majority of people don't buy games at full price, bringing the profitability of those sales way down.

Yep, seems more like unsatisfactory work led to these people losing their jobs more than anything.

Or they just scrapped the project altogether and had no spot for them elsewhere with them moving and hiring quite a bit over the last couple of months.

May have scooped up some Irrational guys too.

They had ~220 employees before this.

Talked to someone from SSM and, despite not getting any completely straight answers, this is about what I can make of the situation. They're really bummed about some of the people that are gone but it doesn't sound like it was one of the major projects that got the axe. I wish all the people that got layed off the best. Some serious talent in that pool.

As reported earlier, Sony Santa Monica has been hit by significant staff lay-offs, and there are reports that a project has been cancelled in the process. It's come to light that Microsoft are now hiring said ex-staff

Phil Spencer was asked on Twitter:

"With IG closing SSM lay offs, MS should be able to scoop up a lot of talent for BT and new studios, don't you agree, Phil? #helpDEVS"

To which he replied:

"Like the #helpDEVS tag. Keep that one going. We've reached out and are engaged in hiring."
