Serious question
what are some good
resources, as a casual fan. That I can use to further my understanding of the game along with all of the contracts and trades?

Bonus question:

I'm getting Married next spring, the only things the little lady has on our registry is money, whiskey and Season tickets for the Pelicans. Am I being trolled?

Is this all supposed to be one sentence? Search "corndeaux"

Sorry about that. I'd blame my phone, but it's probably user error.

Sebastian Pruitti doesn't write any more on account of his writing getting him a job with a team, but his specialty was breaking down and diagramming plays. If you're just looking for general understanding his older stuff will still teach you a lot LINK /

For Pelicans specific information Jake Madison at BSS did a good job of breaking down plays and schemes last year in his "Beneath the Screen" series. He hasn't written too much this year, but his stuff is worth a read for what you're looking for. LINK /

If you have an hour a day and NBATV then the Starters is a show that is entertaining to watch and covers the NBA. If no NBATV, it also comes in podcast versions on Itunes and here LINK

If you're looking to learn about the Pelicans, BourbonStreetShots.com does some pretty decent indepth analysis and numbers. While TheBirdWrites is more of an entertaining and easier to wrap your head around read to me.

As far as contracts and trades, there's BasketballInsiders which has the salaries and contracts for every team, along with their recent trade and transaction history. That's here LINK

Anyhow, good luck man.

These are just a few of my favorites. There are lots of other writers putting out great content on the NBA.

Both Pels team sites do good work. They arent perfect, but they are putting in time and producing solid content without much, if any, compensation. Certainly both worthy reads and worthy of support for team fans.

For contracts/cap stuff:

Echo Gyno here, Larry Coon is the bible on the CBA.

Mark Deeks (shamsports, sbnation, and other outlets) is also dynamite. He's got some good features on league trends (e.g. rising value of 2nd rd picks) too.

Both Pelicans blogs (BSS and Bird Writes) do a nice job with the cap relevant to the Pels

For on court stuff:

To echo TigerinATL, Pruiti was great. His Grantland work and old NBA Playbook stuff was fantastic

Mike Prada does a similar weekly piece called Prada's Pictures.

Any team feature by Zach Lowe

A guy on SBNation breaks down after time out (ATOs) plays. Really neat series

Larger Picture/Esoterica:

Tom Ziller. His pieces on 3pt shooting, the value of assists, and others offer insightful looks at league trends. Great read this morning on competitive balance in the NBA

Old FreeDarko site and their two books. Weird takes (and interesting art) on players and the league, but always entertaining. I linked to one of their team building concepts here in a post this summer. Search for Z Graphs. Thought provoking stuff

Henry Abbott. Will be taking over NBA coverage on ESPN.com. Abott is smart and does a good job tackling big picture stuff. He helped create HoopIdea.

Here's a interesting one from today.

The Future of Basketball

quote:

While pace and 3-point shooting are the system’s cornerstones, the keys that make it work are spacing — making sure players get to the corners, not just to shoot, but to spread out defenders — and quick decision-making.

Smith believes coaches too often try to control the game by calling plays and directing the ball to certain spots on the court, so the Vipers have very few sets. Instead, Smith walked the team through a series of quick actions — screens, cuts, flares, and handoffs — which they combine to produce quick open looks. Each sequence lasted just a few seconds and ended in a 3 attempt or shot near the rim. Showing Kadji the entire Vipers offense took exactly 14 minutes.

“It’s not that hard to cover,” one rival NBA exec says, “but if you make one little mistake covering any of the several different actions, they’ll swing the ball to that guy and they’ll hit a 3.” Maybe the most surprising thing about the Vipers is that they get good looks — for all the 3s they take, the shots rarely seem forced.

“It’s all based on what the point guard sees,” Jason Young, the team’s 24-year-old video coordinator, tells me. As for designed plays, Young says: “There’s no need for it, not the way we want to play, at the pace.” As Smith says, “If I can have a game where I don’t call out anything, then we played well.”

Good article. It sounds like Morey would fire Monty.

quote:

“It really was born of nothing more than the insight that defenses are getting more sophisticated,” Morey says. “You can’t beat these Tom Thibodeau, Jeff Van Gundy set defenses that are really well designed. You’ve got to beat them up the floor to have a chance to score.”

I find it helpful to find two national and active writers that resonate with me, then I read their stuff, no matter the team. Go heck the stats, details, etc. See if they actuslly make sense after you check. See if you can understand why they say what they do, whether you agree or not. Pay particular attention when they seem to disagree.

You'll move on as you get more data and analysis under your cap, but it'll give you a path... It's less daunting.

Ziller is tops in my mind. Lowe is very good. I do not always agree with them, but I find their writing very palatable.

Following another team loosely may help, too. You can learn without you passions blurring your vision.

ETA: This article details the 2012 offseason moves and cap considerations pretty finely. It may be of use.LINK /
