During the first month of Colorado’s experiment with legal marijuana, welfare beneficiaries withdrew thousands of dollars in public-assistance cash from ATMs at weed shops, according to records obtained by National Review Online.

At least 64 times, public-assistance benefits were accessed at businesses selling marijuana. A total of $5,475 in public benefits was withdrawn at ATMs in establishments that sell pot. This figure includes medicinal dispensaries, recreational stores and at least one place that combines the two. Some of these establishments sell groceries as well as pot, so there is no way to know exactly how much welfare money was spent on marijuana.

The amounts withdrawn ranged from $20 to $400, averaging $85.55, according to the transaction records. In Colorado, the average household receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) benefits includes one adult and two children, and the maximum monthly benefit for them is $462.

Both the number of transactions and the amount withdrawn represent only a small fraction of the more than 42,000 electronic-benefits-transfer (EBT) withdrawals that occurred in Colorado in January. Nonetheless, the transactions demonstrate the Centennial State’s lack of oversight of improper use of welfare benefits.

This is the main problem. There should be no ability to withdraw cash from these accounts.

This is not a lot of money. However, I realize it's the principle of the matter. The weed industry shouldn't be demonized because of the recipients' misuse of their state-sponsored benefits.

It's easy. Fix #1, #2 will follow.

It's not. But I wonder how many ATM's were available at the time, and how many more are now, and will be in the future.

Maybe. It does show, how misguided individuals are, that are on Gov't assistance though. The fix is removing people off Gov't welfare, and making them solely responsible for themselves. It's disgusting that $1 is spent on pot, when they are on Gov't subsidies.

I think it's disgusting that $1 is spent on booze, cigarettes, junk food and other drugs by people who are on govt assistance but it's been happening for a long, long time. There's no need to affiliate that misuse with the weed industry.

I hope they keep it up.

The more recipients use welfare for fun and recreation, the sooner the public will vote to end the program.

Agreed.

But, it's just been shown, that it's expanded to that.

And it needs to change. Not be given the attitude, well, everyone else is doing it, we'll just live with it.

One would hope. I don't think it would though. I think it'll just continue sinking us as a whole, quicker.

Gov't subsidized pot purchases is a great idea, in lieu of it?

I don't think of it as Gov't assistance. I think of it as stealing MY money.

No, it was attempted to be shown, but the reality is that these welfare recipients can go to an ATM and withdraw cash for whatever they want, booze and cigarettes included.

But, they chose to do it, in a weed shop. Showing that it's likely Gov't money is paying for their weed. Makes you wonder how much withdrawn from other areas also go towards it. Gov't money is now, going to weed, in addition to many other things it shouldn't be.

With their horrible EBT system, I'm sure it's been going on way before pot was legalized.

Also, the article says they can't prove if any funds were actually spent on weed. It's all circumstantial.

Also agreed. Just easily shown to be more probable now.

perhaps another reason for legalization?

It will be easier to document abuse of welfare funds.

At least their weed purchases are now being taxed. If anything, this further supports weed legalization.
