It is getting serious and not funny like it used to be.

the show always does best when it has heart and consequence in it, but it certainly struggles finding the balance of that vs just being a comedy.

SPOILERS

How is this season going off the rails? Lip and Mickey are finally finding themselves. Carl actually has substance to him for once.

Why is it unrealistic for us to see Fiona's court case wrapped up quickly? Did you want them to waste hours of air time in a court room with the kids watching over a span of weeks/months? This seemed a fairly reasonable solution. First time offender did a really dumb thing and the judge didn't want to waste the public's time/money prosecuting Fiona. The way they portrayed the public defender was a nice touch.

The most ridiculous character in the show went off to some random Indian reservation.

Is it crazy that Ian went into some drug induced haze after his gay lover beat the shite out of him and was forced to screw a hooker in front of him at gunpoint by the hood rat dad?

This is the pinnacle of what the show's been imo. The characters have development. They aren't out stealing 100k cars with some ridiculous Fiona BF. Everything this season has been well within the realm of reality. They even seemed to have fazed out the ridiculous Kev and momma weird love triangle being a focal point of the plot.

they introduce it and swipe it away within about 2 episodes. that's just convenient

also, she would lose custody of the kids and they'd go into foster care (Especially liam). the problem is they picked SUCH a dramatic/extreme dramatic scenario for fiona that getting her "out" is tough. then it gets wrapped up in 2 eps? it's just cheap...a very crude storytelling device (and the show is starting to use a lot of them, if you notice. see: frank's other daughter)

no. but him getting in the military and him getting out of the military was, again, a cheap narrative device. you don't just walk away from that situation. it's too extreme.

Meh, first time offender and all that.

I thought Liam was released into Frank's custody. Thats why they wheeled him into the hospital and cleaned him up and dressed him nice when Liam was released. The social worker's are monitoring the situation etc.

People go awol from the Army all the time and can spend years avoiding any trouble. If he went awol from a reserve or guard unit they can just process him out with a bad discharge with nothing happening on his end.

Some folks like the show, some dont, you are nit picking a bit though.

The show would be much better if they had one gratuitous Emmy Rossum nude scene in every episode.
