Moss grows on the north side...SAFETY WARNING

So I'm installing a new furnace vent pipe at a rental property yesterday. The south-facing part of the shingle roof (right) is mostly clean, and the north-facing part of the roof (left) is discolored by typical lichen growth.
I walked around on both sides of the roof just fine as I've always done. Then along comes a very light drizzle…hardly anything…not enough to justify getting down off the roof.
Lesson learned: once dampened, that lichen/moss gets slippery as greased owl shite. I slipped and nearly slid all the way down a SHALLOW pitched roof. Caught myself on a vent pipe at the last second.
Once the drizzle stopped and the sun came out 30 minutes later, the traction on the lichen-covered surface went back to normal.

What did you do after you grabbed the vent pipe? I hope you had help getting down.
I didn't know a roof could get that slick. Thanks for posting.

How old is that roof? There is a product called shingle shield. Spray it on and it will look like new.

As I was reading the story, I was kinda looking forward to pics of someone falling of the roof. Glad you didn't have to go through the pain, kinda

Glad you snagged something. The gutters saved my arse last year, but hitting the gutter and digging feet in knocked ladder down.

You were very fortunate to catch yourself but I LOL'd at the skid mark photo.

You know OxyClean will dissolve that crud like nothing else right? I mixed up a batch in a 50-gal trashcan and used an old irrigation pump hooked up to a hose to spray down the roof. Looked like coffee was running through my gutters but I haven't had the stuff come back for 3 years so far.

I did laugh at the skidmark pic but only cause like others have said I have been there

Great ideas/thoughts. Those shingle were laid in 2001 and still in really good shape. I cleaned with a mild bleach solution several years ago. Seemed to work OK. I'm going to try that OxyClean idea.
Nobody helped me down. I called for help to no avail. I just laid there wedged against the vent pipe for nearly an hour contemplating doing a PLF (paratrooper landing fall) but figured someone would eventually come around.
I watched that lichen slowly dry before my eyes. Once dry, traction was perfectly normal and I walked right up like normal. I've been on roofs a lot, but never experienced this before.
