I just got a bmag not long ago and I can't find enough ammo for it to want to keep it. I'm thinking about getting a 22-250 for what I was going to use the 17wsm for. This includes plinking, coyotes, turtles, snakes, raccoons, crows, buzzards, and maybe hogs(never been hog hunting but I'm hoping to go in the future). Do you think the 22-250 is a good round for this? I like the 204 as well but If I see a deer with 22-250 in my hands I can legally blow it's head off.

My brother has a 700VTR in .22-250

Very very badass round. I personally thing the .223 is a little better just because of how much cheaper it is to shoot, but that .22-250 is a bad mutha and not many people can outreach it.

"legally"? so everything turned out ok? you don't need permission from gf, her parents, her grandparents, the maid, the police or the judge?

why waste bullets? you can blow a deers head off with arrows from over 50 yards away, no?

yes, that was a smile,, semi-forced, but still a wrinkled, leathered up old smile from a toothless mouth with old man spittle running down the edges onto my hand made bib from my great great grand kids.

.22-250 is great for hog hunting and general varmint control, and as you said, you can legally kill deer with it. I would get one. The only issue I see with your question is that you mention using it for snakes and turtles...I dont think it is a good use of ammo as it does not cost the same as a rimfire to shoot. Fot he other usesyou mentioned, it is an amazing rifle round.

I like this caliber and nearly pulled the trigger on purchasing a used one two months ago.

The browning bolt in this caliber looks nice - will take time to find the right one.

The cost of ammo isn't my concern, the availability is what I'm concerned about. If I can't go to a store and pick up a few boxes, I don't want it. So wasting money on turtles and snakes is fine with me, plinking is a bigger waste IMO.

I've never had a problem finding it when I was shooting it.

it's a great round
However it's surprisingly loud if you've never shot it before
I think 204 is the better compromise between horsepower and noise

22/250 is an amazing round. I think you need a nice .22 long rifle for plinking and leave the 22/250 for varmints and deer if you want. 22/250 is a waste for plinking at small critters unless your wanting to take it out from 100 to 500 yards.

A_bear,
Sorry to hear of your dilemma....Not having ammo to shoot is the pits! I'm curious as to the areas where you'll be shooting? Are we talking about deep woods where shooting doesn't upset anyone or lightly populated areas where loud gunfire might be a problem? The 22-250 is a FINE varmint and predator hunting round (in fact, I've got a 22-250 Ackley Improved Encore barrel, but that's another story), but it does have significant muzzle blast. Top end 22-250 loads (the kind you'll be buying off the shelf) use about 50% more powder than do similar 223 loads. The 22-2250 will obviously be MUCH louder than the 17 WSM. Depending on where you'll be shooting, I wonder if the 22-250 will be a little too much.

I have a Kimber in 22-250 that is one of my favorite rifles.
Walnut stock
Blue action
Stainless barrel
Semi fluted
2.125 lbs trigger
4.5-14 leupold varmint reticle

I have dispatched the following with ease:
Deer
Hogs
Yotes
Prairie dogs
Coons
1 fox

I've also been told the gun will kill collered snow geese out to 400 yds

Just got this one about a month ago. Haven't killed with it yet, but incredibly accurate. I've been to three different academy's since I got it and all three have had ammo.

It would be used far away from any urban areas. I have land about a mile back in the woods and then some property behind the levee. The land behind the levee has ponds that hold turtles, snakes, beavers, and nutrias. Even if I shot a 50cal back there no one would have rights to complain. Coyotes will be shot in crop fields away from civilization as well. For shooting around the house I have a 22lr already to keep the noise down.

I have a Stainless Ruger Hawkeye. It's the most accurate gun I have ever owned. Just lean up on a tree and put them in a skoal can lid at 250yds all day.

Ask BP how deadly they are on hogs. He was a bit skeptical when I showed up with my pee shooter. It dropped every hog I shot in it's tracks.

That's a browning abolt? Nice looking gun. I wish I could find a left handed thumb hole stock.

It,s an x-bolt. Got it at bowie's. I actually went to try and find a .17 WSM, but once I saw that one I had to have it. They had one other thumb hole but it was right handed also.

If that's the case, you should be fine w/ a 22-250. Compared to the 223 Rem, when using comparable bullet wts, it'll add bout 300 fps to what the 223 will do.
