Can it be done yourself or don't try it?

If you have not done.AC work, you will just waste a bunch of freon before calling a real ac man to finish it for you....

Anything dealing w dangerous gases/ liquids under pressure is where I draw my line as around-the-house handyman.

Unless you're some type of handyman prodigy, this is the most likely outcome.

You have to have a vacuum pump and it is more then changing the coil. You will have to add or replace filters at the condenser unit outside. Then the gas can kill you.

Call a AC person. That is not a DIY job unless you have the tools of the trade.

Guess I'll bite the pillow. Was quoted 1950 to change coil. Is that fair?

Did I miss an OB thread where the definition of this word was changed?

Hell no. Way to high. This past summer I paid $2400 to have the complete coil and heat strip/blower unit changed out. Yes, it was a buddy deal, but normal price for that is around $2800. Were do you live? I might be able to hook you up with my buddy.

I have.

Never had done one previously.

It really wasn't that hard...Rented vacuum pump and gage set. Flushed lines with nitrogen then pulled vacuum and checked it the next day. No leaks. Charged system...good to go. This was with some solder work on the copper as well.

(disclaimer: I can fix or install pretty much anything)

You should be able to close of the valve going from the compressor to the coil and pump the freon into that part of the system. Then close the valve going from the coil back to the pump. cut out and change old, solder in new. vacuum down and check for leaks. open valves and voila! you should be good to go. May have to put a couple pounds of refrigerant in.

If none of this makes any sense to you or you don't know how to find it.... call and ac guy.
