The Browns’ unpredictable head-coaching search nearly finished with what would have been the most unpredictable outcome of any head-coaching search since Jon Gruden was traded from the Raiders to the Buccaneers a dozen years ago.

Per multiple league sources, the Cleveland Browns nearly pulled off a trade with the 49ers for the rights to coach Jim Harbaugh.

A deal that would have sent multiple draft picks to San Francisco was in place between the teams. But Harbaugh ultimately decided not to leave the 49ers.

No way I agree to go to Cleveland if I'm Harbaugh unless they jack up my salary pretty significantly.

If I was in charge and my coach produced on the field and put fans in the seats, I don't think I would care about my personal relationship with him. Never understood this. Guess that's why I'm not in charge

I wonder who the Browns would have had to give up.

Kinda what im thinking. The guy has made it to 2 straight conference championships and a Super Bowl. Im thinking if I were in charge, I could live with those kinds of results regardless of our relationship.

Something in the area of the Gruden trade:
quote:

Gruden replaced the fired Tony Dungy as head coach of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2002, via a high-stakes trade that included Tampa Bay's 2002 and 2003 first-round draft picks, 2002 and 2004 second-round draft picks, and $8 million in cash

Can't do that anymore, coaches can't be trade for draft picks.

Wow. That's crazy. To be willing to leave a stacked young team in the Bay Area for Cleveland?!? To go from Colin Kaepernick to Brandon Weeden?

This is what I was kind of thinking...trying to explain away the odd coaching search as if they were all in on Harbaugh

if san fran said okay to whatever trade, unless its in the coach's contract clause, he would be forced to leave right?

Because I'd imagine it kind of hard not to trade a coach for 4-5+ top 2 round picks.

Sounds like BS. The 49ers being willing to dump Harbaugh for essentially cash that they don't really need (since coaches can't be traded for picks), Harbaugh wanting to leave the Bay Area and wanting to join the same division as his brother sounds reaaalllly thin.

The Browns are a quarterback away from being competitive.

They already have an elite receiver and corner, and a very good tight end.

Yeah especially considering you can't trade head coaches anymore

The Browns have a decent amount of individual talent.

I believe they had 6 pro bowlers this season fwiw.

Unfortunately, they lack decent coaching and QB play, which are arguably the 2 most critical positions on a NFL team.
