quote:
Ole Miss police said three freshman have admitted through an attorney to tying a noose around the neck of a statue of James Meredith. The students, who are all from Georgia, haven't been named, but police said they have been kicked out of a campus fraternity.
quote:
Ole Miss Police Chief Calvin Sellers said the next step is to convince prosecutors to issue arrest warrants for the three and determine what charges, if any, they could face. Sellers said there was no vandalism, but authorities are looking into possible federal hate crime charges.

this is a hate crime? lol

When keeping it real goes wrong.
The definition of a hate crime is so nebulous that yes, it would be pretty easy to bring that charge when putting a noose around a (stone) black man.

I think they are trying to find something, anything, to charge them with. No actual damage to the statute, so vandalism is out.

hate crime against a statue. that's a new one. they'll probably each get 5 years. then the statue will sue them.

Kicking them out of school should be punishment enough. That negative mark on their student record might keep them out of most universities.

I read about this in the Sun-Herald two or three days ago. These kids are seriously stupid. What the frick did they think was going to happen?
Posted on 2/21/14 at 11:11 am to AnonymousTiger
I'm pretty interested in seeing how this thing plays out.
Obviously, those kids did something that was not only really stupid, it was very offensive - especially to black folks.
But does it rise to the level of a federal crime?
I don't think it does.

They will learn the hard way while most of us get by and learn over time.

Especially using a Georgia Confederate flag which was no doubt hanging over one of those kids futons. There probably aren't that many in Oxford. Everyone on campus would have known it was them within the week regardless of the 25k reward.
