I bought a new construction house last year and I have no tress in my yard. I am looking to plant 4 or 5 in a few weeks. A couple I have been looking at are the flowering dogwood, magnolia, bradford pear, and a Japanese maple. Anyone have any other trees that they are a big fan of that looks good?

Hell no to the Bradford pear. Will break in three years with a mild storm.

live oaks (not to be confused with water oaks) are the best, but they take a long time to grow.

Pecan trees are nice as well.

I would personally go with live oaks and magnolias.

These need to be planted in an area that gets a good bit of shade. I planted two of these after I built my house and the Louisiana summer scorched them.

Dog woods need shade.

Live oaks or pecans are nice, but the take a long time to grow. If you want faster gratification plant river birch.

According to that site, Central can handle it. BR can not. Zones 5-8

My dad planted some Bradford Pears at out camp after a tornado took out about a 100 oak trees last April. The deer rubbed all the bark off of every B. Pear over the winter and they will all be dead soon. They didn't even make it to the first spring wind event.

what are you going for? shade? look? fruit? pretty flowering? fast growing?

You can plant Taiwan Flowering Cherry Trees here. Those are the pink ones you see on sorority row right not. You can't plant the ones you see in DC. Those don't grow here.
