I have a John Deere LT150 riding mower 15 hp kohler engine. It will start fine and idle with the brake engaged. It dies when I release the brake in any gear forward(5speed), neutral, or reverse with or with out the blades engaged. It will move a little bit, almost like popping the clutch on a standard vehicle. I can press the brake/clutch back in before it dies and it will continue to run until I let go and don't engage it again. Where do I start and what do I need as far as tools go? Thanks!

I had a tank of bad gasoline cause almost the exact problems with my kohler. Might be something worth looking at.

Hmm..I would think bad gas would mess with it even while it was in idle. It runs fine when the brake/clutch is locked but will look into that.

The safety switch that is under the seat has gone bad, thinks no one is sitting in seat.

Clean the carb. It's getting enough gas to idle but not enough under load.

I pulled this out while it was running and pressed the button with my finger and still died so I guess that is where I will start my journey.

Check continuity across the switch. I bet it's bad.

Safety switch is an open or closed circuit. It doesn't kind of work. If it will idle it's not the safety switch.

If it's the seat sensor, just put a jumper on it. Depending on the connector, something like a paper clip should do it and at least tell you if that's the issue so that you'd know to replace it or not.
