Unless I am misreading this, ivory sales will soon be over in the US completely. It also appears that owning anything with ivory could be illegal?

quote:

New York, and the country as a whole, has an illegal ivory problem, one that President Obama wants to end with a complete ban on the commercial sale of ivory. The ban is part of an executive order against the illegal wildlife trade that the White House announced Tuesday. Owning ivory will still be OK—assuming it was purchased legally in the first place—but selling the white stuff will be a big no-no, unless it’s a “bona fide antique” of over 100 years old (a fact sellers will have to prove).

It says in your quote that owning ivory is still ok.

I dont really have a problem with doing away with the ivory market.

I read in another article that simple possession required the owner to prove the ivory was within guidelines.

Doesn't bother me. I guess they don't use ivory in piano keys anymore?

The only legal ivory in the US was imported before 1989. Later ivory is already illegal to sell.

Most ivory being harvested these days is going to China.

My understanding from several articles is if you own ANYTHING with ivory (like maybe a piano) you will be forbidden from selling or giving that item to someone else unless you can prove it is over 100 years old.

This will do nothing to stop elephants from being poached.

No idea. But hope you never wanted to purchase an ivory handles knife or gun with ivory stocks.

Nope. Not according to my understanding.

Also, you will never be able to put new elephant ivory grips on any of your 1911s.

You seem to be harping on the ivory pistol grips. Is that something that you really wanted?

i see where you are going...and i agree... this will do nothing to stop poaching. it is only hindering people with legal ivory from selling/giving it away unless it is 100 years old.

Some of us can afford grips made of ivory, stag, and other exotic materials and it adds to our enjoyment.

There are shitloads of deer. Killing an elephant just to get its ivory seems extremely stupid and wasteful to me. Aren't they endangered?

I want to kill one for conservation. Where my funds go to help the locals. Take out an old mature elephant that does nothing more for the breeding population of elephants.

Oh that's right. I think it was you who brought it up a few months ago. Don't these big African hunts actually help conservation?

He wouldn't ban it if it were black.
