Exactly.

This will only affect the law abiding. (Sound familiar?)

If we are banning ivory to be fair should we ban ebony?

I don't have a problem with the law. There are plenty of alternatives to ivory that look just as good or better. If you want a status symbol, get diamond scales. And, I think the concern is more about the near extinction of many sub species of rhinos - not so much elephants.

Why should I be outlawed from buying ivory from a reputable dealer who can prove he is selling legal, pre-1989 ivory?

This is nothing but a feel good measure that won't do a damn thing to help elephants.

Because it gets here anyway, and being able to sell it increases demand.

So we aren't enforcing a law, so we are going to create another order that we can't really enforce to fix the problem.

Smartest President ever.

ETA: Besides, under what legal authority can the Executive Branch just decide to do this?

I own ivory and most of it was purchased in the past decade. I really don't have a problem with regulated ivory sales and what ivory I've purchased came from sources that deal in pre-ban ivory that was already in the States and provide documentation. Let me assure you, there is tons and tons of ivory already in the US. Is the current system fool proof? Absolutely not but I'm not sure this legislation really makes sense or that it will help. It will simply drive ivory sales further underground making it even harder to track.

It's a beautiful material and I hate that poaching of elephants for ivory continues to be a problem. China and Asia remain the big culprits, without those countries playing along this will accomplish nothing.

If anyone thinks that hunting anything whatsoever is about projecting some type of image to others is sadly mistaken in their beliefs.

I hunt for a few reasons.

1 it makes me happy and is challenging
2 it gives me an adrenaline rush. 3 i like eating wild game

Nowhere in my logic has to do with projecting an image of myself to others.

If I were to hunt an elephant or lion or leopard or any animal that I hope to one day harvest it will be for the reasons listed. It will be semi-altruistic in that I hope my funds will help continue the ability to have this great tradition in our world. Hopefully it will kindle a connection to the likes of novels written by men like Ernest Hemingway, who lived these adventures. Whose words lit a fire in my soul as a young man.

I'm convinced Obama feels better about himself after an executive order.

Agreed. It is a pointless EO to help his approval rating. Nice work

Support what? The legal ivory in this country came from elephants that have been dead for almost 25 years..

yep LOL its all legal

once again I can afford it and choose not to support it, and there is little sport in the poaching of an elephant, it will lead to extinction just like all the large land animals. Personally I think ivory on a gun is the ghey. its like "look at my diamonds". LOL, if youre not GPatton you cant rock ivory, youre not that tough.

who said anything about poaching? Nobody has advocated that.

Are you so naive that you believe that it is illegal to hunt elephant everywhere on Earth?

If I choose to harvest an elephant, legally, I should be able to keep the ivory.

I didn't know every large land mammal was extinct.

Did this just happen this morning or something?

Also, who are you to comment on the sport of hunting and/or poaching elephant?

Have you ever done it? Do you know what it entails? For all you know it's the most difficult game species on the planet to hunt.

Just to play devils advocate, one could argue that there is more sport in poaching than legally taking any animal. If you define sport as difficulty of harvest, as most hunters do, then there is an added degree of difficulty when operating illegally.

Yep, really challenging to have paid driver pull the Jeep over to within 40-50 yards, have guide say, "that one", then shoot it. Then have natives butcher it for you. Picture how many Yetis it would take to haul that home!

I am impressed with the OP's ability to throw in a somewhat outdoorish connection so that he can post an Obama hating thread on the Outdoor Board.

Where else on TD would one discuss the banning of a material that is traditionally popular for use as gun stocks and knife handles? The Soccer Board?

Clown.

Have you ever been on an elephant hunt?

Believe it or not, that's not how they all go.

Have you ever spent 21 days in the African bush stalking a mature bull elephant to get within 40 yds range and have to make an iron sighted head shot to a spot the size of a half dollar while a fully mature bull elephant is charging you?

Ummm, you don't eat it. It is donated to starving villagers, they eat it.

Please explain the irony. I admire and respect the writings of a very influential outdoorsman. I seek an inner connection with those writings. What does that have to do with projecting an image. It is for my own pleasure. In fact I could argue it is detrimental to my image, as the vast majority of the world frowns upon this type of activity.
