Basically saying the government will now have "observers" in newsrooms, TV and paper, to ask the reporters and others why they are running certain topics.

Oh and the government is also forcing or strong arming them into covering the topics that the government wantsand deems "newsworthy".

This is scary. FCC holds these folks licenses, so if they don't toe the line they could, could, be revoked.

Yup. More enforcers to submit us to their way of thinking. I guess they strictly adhere to to motto "its my way or the highway" and if you don't like it you can leave.

Can't read the article, but the FCC has no business questioning a news agency about its coverage choices.

If true, then this is about the scariest thing to come out of this administration, and that is really saying something.

hope that doesn't lead to a Clash.

The *government* - through Regulation - protects us, employs us, feed us, educates us, allocates health services and is in the process of *equalizing* us.

Any criticism or resistance which makes the government's job harder, is an attack on the people.

The Founders warned us. It's all cyclical. Populous becomes weak and stupid, power-hungry government types like Obama/Pelosi/Reid step in to 'lead'...and it all crashes down. Whey sinks down...Cream rises to the top. Nothing new under the sun.

I can remember Madeline Albright saying that the US was too powerful, needed to be an equal on the World stage. That's probably how the Chinese new fighter jet is an exact ripoff of our Raptor.

I can see the future, seriously. The pain of collapsing societal mechanisms (economic, religious, government and social) inflicted in the next decade will be so severe that some really pissed, demagogic - and likely religious - Nationalist will step up and vow to 'take our Country back' from the Godless and suicidal Progs that have brought the wrath of God down on us. Once the mass of people no longer have faith in the Constitution being fairly implemented (that formerly constrained them)...this place will go rogue.

Oh well. 'Trial by fire'. Here's where Faith counts.

The FCC regulates only publicly broadcast programs; things that are on the public airwaves.

Whatever this is (and I love the reactions based on an introductory sentence and a one sentence summary from a poster), it won't impact any cable or internet news source.

ETA: Here's a link to the full article.

quote:

The government has no place pressuring media organizations into covering certain stories.
Nothing in this story, aside from the opinion bits, indicates that this will be happening.
quote:

Unfortunately, the Federal Communications Commission, where I am a commissioner, does not agree. Last May the FCC proposed an initiative to thrust the federal government into newsrooms across the country. With its "Multi-Market Study of Critical Information Needs," or CIN, the agency plans to send researchers to grill reporters, editors and station owners about how they decide which stories to run. A field test in Columbia, S.C., is scheduled to begin this spring.
Um, how does a study that never even tries to hint at implying that it could consider ever thinking about enforcing anything possibly be seen as "the government thinks it should be pressuring news organizations".
quote:

The purpose of the CIN, according to the FCC, is to ferret out information from television and radio broadcasters about "the process by which stories are selected" and how often stations cover "critical information needs," along with "perceived station bias" and "perceived responsiveness to underserved populations."
quote:

How does the FCC plan to dig up all that information? First, the agency selected eight categories of "critical information" such as the "environment" and "economic opportunities," that it believes local newscasters should cover. It plans to ask station managers, news directors, journalists, television anchors and on-air reporters to tell the government about their "news philosophy" and how the station ensures that the community gets critical information.
...So?

The biggest issue seems to be that they're doing a study on something they admit that they're not going to be taking any action on, anyway. Sounds like just another useless study that the government always does.
