Is there a good handheld GPS that is good for Louisiana marsh fishing, maybe some offshore, and some hiking when i go out of town?

Do they connect to a computer where you can plan a route and download it to the unit? or even record a route and refine it on the computer? Anything like this exist?

questions from later post:
i looked at the garmin site an there are 2 hand helds marketed towards marine. GPSMAP 78s and 78sc, one just has the maps preloaded.
so is birds eye actual google earth or just a service like it? are you saying it is better then the normal maps? would it be better to get the unit without the maps and buy birds eye?

Get on garmin.com and spend a few minutes. They have easy to use products and certainly one that will work with most of the uses you have.

This. Garmin has some pretty detailed mapping software that you can get for specific areas. Been using an old Garmin for years and always faithful.

Garmin is good stuff. I have a unit thats a few years old but it came with the software to plan routes, etc and load them into the GPS. You can also import routes and waypoints from Google earth into the software and GPS, which is nice. I have the map pack-- its not as detailed as satellite for marsh fishing, but I think some of the newer ones have satellite subscription

Now be warned that garmin's marine mapping sucks compared to others such as lowrance. But garmin is so easy to use and will be a better hand held unit for hiking and off the boat.

I have a garmin astro 320 handheld for my tracking collar. It's an awesome unit. The old man has a lowrance in his boat and it is also awesome. I think you get what you pay for with these things.

Agreed. I got a little mount for my handheld so its my boat GPS too. There's definitely better marine units but for versatility a garmin handheld is tough to beat

I've got a Garmin eTrex Legend (old model) and it does everything you mention there. I've had no issues other than some slow response to getting satellite pickup sometimes...

You might want to look at an tablet with gps built in like the Samsung Galaxy 3. Then install Navtronic App and get a waterproof case.

Garmin's marine mapping does indeed duck, but I have a Garmin Oregon handheld and Birdseye. It's basically an overlay of Google Earth so you don't have to use Garmin's regular marsh mapping. I use it running Hopedale and Reggio during duck season and I love it.

Is birdseye good? I've read some piss poor reviews for it when I was looking at getting it for my tracking unit.

Don't do this. It will be of no help when you don't have wifi or cell service. Where as a garmin runs off satellites

I use my Tablet many of times offshore, it has the Gps built in to the tablet. It does not used the wifi and it does not have wireless access network built in.

he is talking about keeping the maps updated. you can "download" sections of google maps but you are limited to the area you can download.

i looked at the garmin site an there are 2 hand helds marketed towards marine. GPSMAP 78s and 78sc, one just has the maps preloaded.

Same thing I have. I've put it through some rough shite and it still works perfectly.

I have the topo map on my etrex as well as the North American Road map. They are decent

On my Marine 540, I have whatever the maps that come on it. I hate these maps compared to the marine maps available for Lowrance, but these ease of use trumps the maps because I know the areas I fish well enough to excuse the poor maps.
