I admire anyone who has volunteered time to work in public schools (like me ).

Browning seems like a classy guy, unlike the other two leaders of the effort. I just wish Browning would put as much effort into improving the EBR school system as he has trying to break away from it. If he did, I have no doubt the EBR system would be better than it is. A LOT better.

We need more people like him in our community.

Good post Russian!

I don't know all go the people in the fight for St. George, but I know Norm. His reasons for pushing for the new school district are genuine.

I'm not familiar with this situation. What are the problems facing the EBR school system? Why is there a push to split from it?

Maybe I didn't read enough of the article but I didn't see the issues laid out. Just says it's not a good system.

This article is the first time I've learned anything about Browning. I'm impressed with him.

If the St George effort fails, I'd love to see him run for mayor of EBR. He'd be a heck of a lot better candidate than Mike Walker was last election, IMO.

I would argue that he is following the path of least resistance.

Sad that it would be easier to incorporate a new city and form a new school district than reform an existing one.

It's a long story, literally going back almost 50 years when the Fed government filed suit against the EBR school system for being segregated.

Basically, the Feds took over the management of the school system in order to desegregate it bringing about massive busing within the parish which dislocated many students from their traditional neighborhood schools resulting in "white flight" from the public school system.

With that white flight and lack of local control of the school system (the Feds were running it) came indifference by much of the population towards our public school sector. The system went into a serious decline.

The suit was settled in 2008 and the 2009 school year was the first year when the school board actually started being able to run the school system again.

Although the school system is no longer required to force students to be bussed all over the parish, a lot of parents are leary of the school system, although the system has already shown improvement as its school ratings improved from a D to a C just this school year.

It's a long way to go to be a good school system and some of the more affluent people who populate the St George area are tired of waiting for more improvement and want to establish their own system like Zachary, Baker and Central did a few years ago.

Nice post Russian. Especially since I know you are not a fan of the St George movement. I'm still listening. I feel certain it would benefit me personally but I am also pleased with the progress of the city's public profile in the last decade.

Yes, we need more like him. Not bitter, just principaled.

Interesting comment.

It Seems like he has spent a lot of his time and effort within a system that apparently has not provided satisfaction. I'm thinking he is operating from a more informed position than I am and hence give him the benefit of the doubt. It's people like him that will hold sway for the movement.

I worded that part of my OP poorly. He has worked tirelessly for a public school, primarily Woodlawn High School.

What I meant was I wish he would be more involved with the school system as a whole...run for school board, show up at school board meetings and speak up...that sort of involvement.

He seems like a dynamic type of person who might could energize more people to hold the school board accountable. That would help improve the entire school system.

That's what I meant.

By having a leader smart enough to not plow full speed through iceberg invested waters in order to set an Atlantic Ocean crossing speed record.

Norman is the only guy I know involved with SG

We went to the same HS and had kids in the same schools.

He tried working inside the system for years and left frustrated. The school system in EBR is so screwed up it really needs a complete do over.

I can see how Norman became do frustrated

The wife and I put HOURS into volunteering in EBR schools every week. We put in four hours just yesterday at Sherwood Magnet. By "the wife and I" I mean the wife of course.

I have seen you staunchly anti St George here for some time. I know Norman has been trying to improve education options and outcomes for a long time. The Legislature told them no multiple times, and then told them how they could be told yes.

Some of your comments have been unfair in light of knowing how long he worked before they went this route.

He is not some close personal friend, but I do know him. He is literally the salt of the Earth. He's has always been one of the voices out in front of the efforts to improve education. Not some municipal power grab.

That's correct. I'm still pro-Better Together.

I've received some publicity for my community involvement. Not that it's a big deal, but you DID ask.

You didn't answer my question, how have I been unfair to Browning?

There are a lot more Norman Browning's than you know of. The biggest supporters are not motivated by some partisan fantasy, but rather frustration and disenfranchisement after trying to bring about change. YEARS of trying in most cases. This movement is not something any of us take lightly.

Unfortunately, offsetting Norman Browning is Bodi White and Lionel Rainey.

Whatever your opinions of those two may be, bear in mind that both are merely volunteers. I hear countless stories of frustration, bewilderment, and fear as people sign the petition. I really believe your eyes would be opened hearing the plights of these parents in the unincorporated area.
