Like it's been said before, one day we are going to look back and think of these as the good ol days.

4. Sean Payton
Career Record: 73-39 (.652)
With The Saints Since: 2006
The Payton model has taken some lumps in recent years. There’s the whole “getting suspended for an entire year” thing, and the fact that his Fourth-of-July offense has too often resembled “just” an expensive box of mortar shells on the road. Neither changes the fact that Payton approaches football in a fundamentally-different way than the majority of his peers, and has had far-more success as a result. For many first-time coaches, the first thing they ask themselves is, “how can I fit this square peg into this round hole?” For Payton it was, “how can I maximize our home-field advantage and ability to score points?” Payton may have built the home dominance before the road competence, but that didn’t stop him from being at the helm for New Orleans’ first Super Bowl title in 2009. And for all the hand-wringing over the Saints' “struggles” away from the Superdome, Payton has as many road playoff victories as Bill Belichick since 2006. It’s hard for any team to win away from home, not just Payton’s. An idiosyncratic leader in a league full of followers, Payton is going to oversee an above-average team for as long as he remains in New Orleans.

I call it the golden age of Saints football. Any that can remember certainly knows we had more than a fair share of dark ages.

That can't be true?
We need the nega-saints brigade to refute these damnable lies!

Agreed. For example, Chip Kelly in the Top 6? I don't think so.
However, this was more of a atta boy for CSP than it was a discussion of the rankings.

Saints went 2-3 against this top 10 this year. Not terrible considering 2 losses came to the same guy.

Kelly, Harbaugh, and Caroll make this list a joke. You should have to have at least 5 continuous years of coaching in the league to even be a candidate.
EDIT: The only one of the three that gets any true credit from me is Chip Kelly. Dude inherited a crap team and in his first season made the playoffs. Other two landed in dream jobs with great defenses and Carrol got lucky his scouting and front office team pulled the plug on Wilson in the 3rd. No props.

Payton and Harbaugh should be flipped.

Maybe more GM-ing than coaching but I've been ranting about how SF, Seattle, & Carolina have yet to pay the price capwise. They all have a ton of players on rookie deals. Virtually the entire Seattle D, every one of those starting QBs, etc. Think the Saints from '06 to '09. We rode the same wave of cheaply paid players to the top the same way. Let's go another couple years and see how well Harbaugh & Carroll coach minus some of their key players. The Saints have already gone through that cycle losing players like Faine, Bush, Nicks, Goodwin, Bushrod, Porter, Shockey, Dunbar, etc

SP #2
If you are going to put Pete & Harbaugh over SP then you gotta put both of em ahead of Belicheck too.
I can't even remember the last time the pats won a Superbowl.

I know, but the bad selections reduces the legitimacy of the list, IMO.
Regardless, CSP is at least top 4, if not higher. I just don't agree with some of the selections.

Carrol is doing good now with surprising young talent, but at his last stop he was awful and he's just now going to get into the hard stretch of cap juggling.
Same goes with Jimmy Baugh, but I'll give him credit for maximizing the talent they had when Singletary could not. But the cap is coming for them too.
Johnny Baugh is just now being hit by the cap and you can see the effects. Now if he is a top coach he should be able to keep them at around 10+ wins.
Kelly and Arians have not right to be up there period. So many coaches have had one good year to go on and flop and never do anything again.
As cliche as it is, Belichick has kept his team at the 10+ range and in the playoffs for years now. He definitely deserves to be at the top of current coaches.
Payton, McCarthy, and Reid are that next tier. I'm biased so of course I'd put Payton second, but it's close between them all.
Third tier should be Carroll, Jim and John, and Coughlin. I think of the guys not mentioned Fisher, Mike Smith, Lovie Smith, and John Fox also deserves to be in this group. Maybe Marvin Lewis too.
Everyone else falls into the too soon to judge group or Rex Ryan and Jason Garret.

before being suspended last season, payton had the most wins in the entire NFL since becoming a headcoach. then he comes back and nearly makes the nfc championship game after missing an entire year with no contact.

He's been carrying Brees for years now, he must be a pretty good coach.
