I'm gonna take the boat out to big lake Saturday morning and try to catch some reds/ specks. Always been a bass fisher so I'm new to this. Any suggestions? Weather is going to be great btw.

I'm wanting to get out there too if I can find someone to go with me.

Reds are at the weirs. Specks are a slow bite right now. Might be worth trying West Cove with the weather though.

I suggest bringing someone that knows how to fish the lake

It's saltwater fishing, not sac au lait. Just throw it out there. He'll be fine.

depending on the size of the boat you should check the wind conditions...

Yep. There's a bayou that dumps out into a flat. My secret honey hole.

Seen quite a few 7#ers come from there by wade fishermen.

you should either go with someone that knows the lake or at least get a top spot map...

I went without either and it was a total waste of time...got a top spot map and did ok, after that...

understand, that the fishing there is a bit different, as you are not gonna catch the numbers that you would farther east...but can catch a monster every once in a while...

Just launch on the side of the lake where the wind is coming from and you should be ok. There's Herbert's on the east, public on the north and Hackberry on the west.

Got one. And yea having a small boat Im used to working with the wind so that doesn't bother me to much. It will be blowing out of the east so Im thinking about hitting the mouths on the SE side of the lake. Thanks for the tip, I'll report back Saturday evening, otherwise send out the search party!

cool...let us know what you catch...

and as the others say, do be careful...that is a big shallow lake and does become pretty dangerous in the wind...

also, pay attention to the locations of mud flats and reefs if the tide is falling...you'll tear your shite up quickly....
