We've seen the results on our football Tigers. We're seeing the same thing on our basketball Tigers. Inconsistency. Perpetual rebuilding. Missing the most talented upperclassmen, who once provided leadership and mentoring for the younger players. It's a problem that will not go away until something is figured out to keep players from bolting to the NFL/NBA. I don't know what that is - maybe some kind of stipend or pay. But then the NCAA will scream "amateurs!" and drop sanctions on the offenders. And so it goes... Meanwhile, who suffers most? The loyal fans who plunk down the big bucks to buy tickets to see these things unfold, year after year.

There weren't really any early departures that hurt this team.

There will be next year though. Losing O'Bryant and Mickey will be hard to replace.

Kids getting paying jobs is not a problem! The problem is people who see the state institution as a for-profit minor-league franchise and will do anything, including passing state laws, to force down labor costs, restrict competition, and protect their cash cow.

So basically, we're bitching about what MIGHT happen next year IF guys leave and completely speculating about the performance of the team next year? Got it.

It's cumulative. Missing upperclassmen, missing leadership and the like from previous years leads to teams like this one.

What word(s) would you use to describe this team? As in: Lacking talent? Lacking leadership? Rebuilding? Inconsistent? If so, why?

Which upperclassman? Turner and derenbecker who transferred? Would hardly make a difference. In fact this teams plays likeit is impersonating ralston turner most of the time.

They lack fundamentals, are poor defensively and just dont play very smart. I agree with the premise of the OP but it just doesnt apply to this team

This team has two seniors and two 3 year starting juniors in the eight man rotation. What upperclassmen leadership are they missing due to early departures?

The ones that weren't there for the current seniors and juniors when they were fresh/soph newbies. But I guess early departures aren't only to the NBA, but also for disciplinary or academic issues as well. Whatever reason, I think it has a cumulative effect and contributes to a lot of the kinds of inconsistencies we see on this current crop of LSU basketball Tigers.

I could be mistaken here, but I'm pretty sure the last time LSU had a player leave for the draft early was Anthony Randolph in 2008. Any other attrition or lack of experience on this team is due to poor recruiting and team construction.

Ok, then most of our early player departures aren't NBA related but for other reasons. Poor recruiting, how the team is put together, key injuries - whatever else. I have the distinct impression that year in, year out LSU is for some reason or another rebuilding its basketball team. And if my impression is not far off from reality, that means there is an almost systemic lack of experienced LSU upperclassmen out there. And that has got to have a cumulative impact on player development among the younger team members. Which is then passed on to the succeeding teams.

Sorry if I was bashing the NBA wrongfully in this case.

There's no doubt that there's been a lack of consistency and development the last few years. I attribute most of that to poor recruiting by Trent Johnson.

This criticism may have more validity after this season, depending on how many early departures there are. But in college basketball now, I don't know that you can expect more than 2 years from a guy with good size and ability. We were lucky to get 3 from JOBIII. Hope we can get four, just from a selfish standpoint. And I think it could start a good trend.

Agree. A good trend in basketball and football is really needed. It would start, IMO, with upper classmen speaking out about staying for the duration and setting a really positive role model for the younger guys to follow. That would, IMO, set in motion a trend of longer player tenures and that would surely have a cumulative effect for the better.
