I put off going to see it in the theaters - didn't like the reviews and thought it would just ruin one of my favorite books. Not that I've seen it on Bluray, I think the adaptation was fairly well done. I liked it a lot and am hoping for a sequel.

Not sure how they would make one based on the premise of the next books in line - those are not action-based, more philosophical in nature. Speaker for the Dead is also one of my favorites. Maybe they will go the way of the "Shadow" books which concentrate on Bean - which were also quite good.

Have you guys see the film? What do you think of a sequel?

Hated it. In my top 3 worst movies I've paid to see.

Watched it last night with Mrs. Prez. She found it very hard to follow. It was like perch jerking, only putting your lure in the water just long enough to get a bite.

I was disappointed that they didn't really dwell on Battle School more. What I got from that part of the book was it wasn't just that Ender was winning; it was that Ender always won, no matter what they threw at him. The way he beat his opponents, his training that other armies were showing up for, his complete mastery of the weaknesses of his enemies. They really didn't explain why he was so good.

I had read that the big reveal at the end was going to be made aware to the audience prior to the final battle, but I'm glad to see they didn't do that.

Loved it but I am not one of these purists that has to have it exactly like the book.

I don't mind changes for reason.

I love Hunt for Red October, both book and movie. Movie left out the entire British fleet as well as changed some very significant items; but mostly that was done for onscreen flow and the fact that they used on location shots of the American carrier fleet. They didn't lose sight of the story.

Here, like I said above, they failed to explain why Ender was chosen. They explained that he was a genius, but we never really saw that develop. They did a poor job with Enders internal conflict, the effects of the stress, etc.

It really was an average movie.

Well, it was nothing like the book.

A couple points:

1. They remove the murders.

2. They inject some lovey dovey crap between Ender and Petra.

3. Peter doesn't exist in the film outside if 30s.

4. They turned the ships Ender commanded into drones which removed one of the big reasons why the whole reveal at the end was shocking to Ender.

5. Mazer Rackham was just terrible. What the hell was with the face tattoos? That isn't even touching on the shitty lines they gave him.

"I wear these so I can be the Speaker for the Dead".

6. There was no challenges thrown at Ender the entire movie and his screaming match with Graff at the end was so god awful that I just laughed.

I could continue my list, but I blocked out most of it.

Scruffy gets it.

I could've given all that a pass if they would've explained why Ender was awesome, not just that he was awesome. Otherwise, its just a kid leading an interstellar Navy.

Exactly. He was angry because he was sending people to die unknowingly. That was as big of a deal at the end as destroying the entire planet of buggers.

Actually, I pieced together that only the fighters were drones. Graff makes a comment when fighting with Ender about losing "over a thousand men when the carriers blew up." I might have heard that wrong.

My wifes never read the book, and was lost.

Didn't see it that way. He thought some were drones - but he was commanding an actual fleet - that was mentioned- I think. Of course, he didn't know this.

Maybe I saw it wrong, because I thought all those kids with the helmets on were pilots.

Of the drone fighters. They were definitely drones.

The other kids were giving orders to the capital ships.

Also, did you catch the screen saying "Mission Failed" when they lost some of the Capital Ships? In the book, he takes a risk and sacrifices part of his force to win, and Graff chews his arse about having limited resources.

wasnt terrible wasn't great.

The biggest problem was they didn't spend nearly enough time at the battle school.

I never got the sense that ender was truly isolated which was a huge part of the book's plot.

Yea, I remember thinking WTF at that scene.

Ender doesn't fail in the book and he explains his reasoning by saying that he had to be willing to lose some ships to win.

+1

I tempered my expectations, and found it visually pleasing. Sure the character development was weak, but I really enjoyed being able to see the zero g arena.

About the drones . . .

I just re-watched the last part.

Graff says in one of the final scenes: "We lost a thousand men on the transporters you abandoned." In which Ender says: "I abandoned them to win." This is referring to when he took the all fighters away to protect the ship that Petra was controlling, the one with the planet-killing weapon . . . leaving the transporters defenseless and eventually destroyed.

That's how I saw it the first time. They changed the individual fighters to drones (I guess being controlled by the guys in the helmets) in the movie - guess a thousand deaths and possible Xenocide were enough.
