Anybody Ever Received a Refund for Stolen Item Through USPS?

Long story short, sold a slowpitch bat to a guy out in Cali. Package arrived empty and the bat was removed. I have filed a claim with USPS to cover my butt if possible, as the bat was expensive and no longer in production, but I'm curious, has anybody on here actually had something like this happen and had the USPS reimbursed them for the lost/stolen item? I hear USPS is a pain the arse about owning up to their screw ups and rarely will pay those who had things stolen/lost on their watch. The item was out of my hands and their responsibility, so naturally I would think they would be liable. But I hear otherwise.

How is it their responsibility. They didn't steal bat out of package?

I had a $200 glove stolen. Never got anything.

this sounds really similar to another thread like this on here. long story short, i think the recipient removed the item and then tried to say the box arrived empty.

Had a box full of shoes stolen from our complex.
We had to file a police report, and the company that sent them actually replaced them for free.

Try to follow along. That's what he's insinuating.
OP, how do you know the buyer isn't trying to scam you?

they lost a pair of sunglasses i sent to get repaired, got $50. unless you bought extra insurance you'll probably only get 50

oilman,
Package became empty at their facility, while in transit. Postmaster in Los Angeles even noted the package became empty... If it was on their property, in an employee access only area, it is their responsibility.
Ryne,
Gah, that is not what I wanted to hear haha Government cant do anything right...

Only crappy thing is I am the seller. I purchased the additional insurance, but the problem is the bat is not replacable, and the guy just wants the bat. This bat has not been in production since 2006 or so, and its near impossible to come by now days.

$50 insurance included when you ship using priority mail. Probably SOL if you shipped regular mail.

I hope the dude is just full of shite, but I was curious if anybody actually has received a refund through USPS. I hear they like to be governmental with their proceedings (take forever, pain in the butt)and was curious if anybody had experience. I expect a DMV-esque experience if it goes there, and I pray it doesnt.

Who the frick would repackage the box and send it along without the contents? The first rule of stealing mail is dispose of the evidence... or so I'm told.

Yes I have received a refund on a claim I filed. Long story short, I mailed 4 silver coins to a buddy in Addis, LA. I am in Lafayette. He and I deal often with coins and bullion. He received package and it was busted open with no coins. I filed a claim online and received a form to fill out about 2 weeks later. About 3 weeks later I got a check for USPS for the insured amount plus the cost of delivery. I was very pleased and suprised at the ease of the claim. Did you insure the package? If not you are probably out of luck.

all you can really do is file an insurance claim

Yes I purchased the insurance. But I did not know if it would be pulling teeth to get a refund. Glad to hear it isnt overly difficult haha I will wait and see how it plays out. I have taken care of everything on my end.

Moms $80,000 diamond was stolen. Was mailed by the jewelry store USPS. They had to go ahead and replace and are still waiting on $ from USPS I hear

Damn! 80K! This was a $250 slowpitch bat. But the reason I am inclind to believe the guy, is the package was refused and never actually delivered. The tracking information even says package refused and being returned to sender... That is the part that caught me off guard. It got all the way there to Cali just to be refused. He couldnt remove the contents in front of a postal worker, then refuse it, could he? Haha
