I would like to challenge other cities across America to see who wins in a checkpoint battle. BR has to be top 10 in the nation.

even with taking away the illegal checkpoints, we probably still run away with it.

While I am about safety I'm not sure that safety is their prime motive in these checkpoints

The supervisor that sets the place and time can't work at the checkpoint. It alleges that rule was broken.

A district Judge ruled that BRPD was conducting illegal check points.

The law says a police supervisor must decide the time and location of a DWI checkpoint. However, that same supervisor cannot take part in conducting the checkpoint. Ivey says that rule has been routinely ignored by Baton Rouge police including during the checkpoint that resulted in his client's arrest.

I think all DWI checkpoints should be illegal...4th amendment unreasonable searches and seizures

I don't care if they are doing it to "protect people" (which they aren't they could give a frick about you its all about getting arrests)

Where Im from, they used to have them about every weekend, now they are somewhat illegal, however there are workarounds. They have fake check points with lots of signs, then they wait and see who reacts

If safety was the top goal they probably would do everything they could to make sure the check points were conducted legally instead of ignoring simple rules.

So the law states something, supervisor can not be present, BR says frick it they can. Then apparently one judge is fine with it going down like that.

Holy shite, sounds like a judge needs to get their arse thrown out to.

It's a simple part of the law and these jackasses just say frick it and do what they want.

Sounds an awful lot like a check point

I don't think BR is the worst place in the state for DUI checkpoints, much less top 10 in the nation.

I'd like to see data on alcohol related car crashes and crashes resulting in death. Per capita, BR is probably top 10 in the nation.

Drinking and driving is part of the Louisiana culture.

They put out signs that say, "Drug Checkpoint Ahead, Canine Units" etc..

There isnt actually a check point, they wait to see which drivers react and pull them over for suspicion.

Are you referring to the judge in the article, because he ruled in favor of the Defendant, which is a good thing for people who think DWI check points are bullshite

BRPD you stop me in three inspection sticker checkpoints but you can't find out who broke into my truck and stole my checkbook, radio, ipod twice (although checkbook was only once).

Fittingly, the judge who made this ruling got a DWI 10 or so years ago.

I'm not sure I understand the logic of the law, though. Why can't that supervisor take part in the checkpoint? What does it violate?
