Need to backup pictures, music, some documents, etc. from a PC and two Macs.

Ebay has a Seagate 1TB for about $65

Also, do I need a high-speed data cable? what kind do you recommend? Thanks

Is there an ongoing charge for that?

PS - Im guessing I will be storing about 50-100 GB of data at first then add on every few months//.... rough guess.

Stout, thanks man. I have a lot more than 5GB although I might use this as well as the external HD.

We use crashplan for our clients. Unlimited remote backup on up to four devices for each user. We use the enterprise version. Where we can adjust backup sets and schedules remotely and push to the software. They have a mobile app too but I haven't messed with it much.

You are gonna need one for each system. I have the seagate 1 tb. I switched from PC to Mac about 2 years ago and it was a pain in the arse to switch files over.

Yea I looked at that, trying to avoid a monthly/yearly charge. Just buy a good external and then also use some of the free cloud stuff out there, AVG has one as well.

I've got a drobo. You can't get them in in many different configurations. I've only got the 4 bay. It's nice because of redundancy. I've got 4 4tb drives in there so it gives me about 8tb of space for backup. If one drive fails or starts to fail it has a warning light next to that particular drive. You push the eject button and swap it with a new one all on the fly. I've had it for four years and had to replace two drives in that time.

Had a 2tb my book before that that failed and I had to pay someone to get my stuff off of it.

To each his own. You wouldn't imagine the amount of failed hard drives we see that were the only backup set. Personally, I like to just be able to set it up and not have to worry about it, especially for $10 a month. Just make sure you have multiple backup drives in case of failure and your most critical stuff online somewhere.

Is that a nas? I like that option too with the redundancy built in. You don't have to manually backup stuff multiple times.

I run a Seagate 500GB external on my home PC. Has it's own backup software/scheduler. I want to say I got it for $20 through TigerDirect when I bought some other stuff.

Simple USB connection, works like a charm.

We use a Seagate for local backup & Dropbox for the cloud. Don't rely on a single hard drive.

Hitachi or Western Digital. Most reliable on the market.

4TB $169:

I was thinking one external with everything and then each machine save critical stuff on free cloud services... Your original plan though might be the way to go.
