What was different that the Assembly Center was packed and on fire? Free tickets for students? Nothing else to do back then?

Wasn't a baseball/basketball fan split back then.

We're just LSU fans.

Probably the part where we went to 8/10 NCAA tournaments that occurred in the 1980s.

Basketball was at the height of it's success in those days. Honestly, basketball all over the country has been losing interest for years

Fans could identify with those teams, players stayed longer, not the one and done.

Football tickets were still cheap so fans could afford both, no one had baseball tickets back then until Bertman built the dynasty.

Students actually went to the games and camped out - students have other interests nowadays.

He was a tireless promotor. And, he won. TBH, though, it wasn't a packed house every time even during the golden era.

Chris Jackson then Shaq...two of the most dynamic college basketball players, ever.

Not really. It's extremely easy to be a diehard for all three major sports, but some are and some aren't.

i totally agree. in the mid70s and through the 80s basketball was on a completely different interest arc nationally. for lsu, i think it peaked when we had stanley, shaq and chris jackson and didn't win it. i'm not saying the fanbase won't follow a winner now, but the overall general interest has fallen off and it could take years to reestablish a core fan base that would consistently attend games at the pmac.

Coach Dale Brown sold something that everyone likes. It is Hope. It was the underdog mentality that with heart and soul and a belief in the possible, that the possible could happen. Dale often quoted Normal Vincent Peale.

No matter how dismal the program looked, Dale made you believe that a team full of rag rats and the downtrodden could rise up and overcome. Hope and nothing more. A belief in yourself. Dale was Rocky Balboa before Sly Stallone was Rocky Balboa. Give me a chance and believe and the good side of humanity will win out everytime or at least propel you to an occassional Final Four.

With John Brady, you got a smug coach who could recruit but who everybody though was an a-hole.

Trent Johnson...well..you saw how pathetic that show was.

Until you can get people to believe it is possible to win and win big, then you have no shot. you need a high profile charismatic coach who can rally the troops. Don't know if Johnny can do it. We will find out soon enough.

He won plus it was a different time when LSU basketball mattered back then.

What was different

Dale went to like 15 NCAAs in a row and he had some of best basketball talent LSU has ever seen on the floor.

Plus, football program was nowhere close to what we have now.

Such bullshite that people actually think Brady could recruit. Butch Pierre/Collis Temple did far more recruiting than Brady ever did. The only thing he did even vaguely well was coach defense. That and running players off.

Well we went to the NCAA Tourny 10 years in a row. That probably helped.
