One thing I've learned from posting here (and the internet in general) is don't believe everything you read on the internet.

I have one friend that will be say all smartass "did you see that on TigerDroppings?!" and I'm like "Yeah, I did, but would you like to see the numerous news links that confirm it???" If I do bring up something from the board without a link or backup, I make sure I start off with "THIS IS A RUMOR...."

This week the same person sends me this article about the olympics.

Link to the New Yorker Article re Gays Flamboyant Displays at the Olympics

It's obvious that it's a satire column and I pointed that out as nice as possible. This person argues with me that "The New Yorker is New York's Magazine like ours is the Times Picayune". Okay, that's all good and great but this dude, that wrote that article writes political satire columns (here are some links about him). They honestly got offended by this conversation and then tried to relate it to things posted here being believable or not.

Then last night, I have another friend talking about this article.

Link to News Article about man responsible for olympic ring not lighting found dead.

quote:

“Sure there were stab wounds and bruises all over the body,” admits the lead investigator on the case, “But who knows what caused them. Maybe he tripped and fell on a set of knives. Right now we’re ruling this an accidental death.

“It’s terrible when accidents like this happen. But then again, maybe Mr. Avdeyev should have thought twice before he screwed up the Olympics. Accidents tend to happen to people who betray Russia.”

How does someone not see the sarcasm in this?!? No surprise to me this turned out to be a hoax article.

Regardless, do any of you have people who bitch about bringing up or quoting what you see posted here (links or no links) but turn around and quickly believe the internet hoax's/obvious satire columns??

(Please note: Although the linked articles are political in nature, this is not a post about politics)

Also, to the people that want to TL;DR this, GFY - I posted that it was a long post in the title and you didn't have to open it.

Have a family member who will often post the most ridiculous satires as truth on Facebook. He's the only one who seems to think they're true news stories.

He doesn't have much of a formal education and works in fast food.

I didn't see that.

This girl last night was quoting the article and was all upset about it. I knew right away after the quotes and asked her what site it was on. Decided it wasn't worth the conversation after the ordeal I had earlier in the week about the gay satire article.

I learned my lesson very early on. Joined in 2007 and read the Jerry Rice as WR coach rumor.

One mass text and 10 minutes later.....

i don't discuss td with my irl friendgroup, but i do see plenty of them link stories that they obviously got from the site

my favorite pattern is when somebody posts something on this site, then it hits facebook/emails, and then somebody comes to post the email/facebook post on the site. circle of internet life

You hit the nail on the head. I am so 'butthurt' - I haven't been able to sleep all week and finally decided to come here to vent about my frustrations.

My favorite are the ones who post satirical articles about politicians they hate, and then blame the politician for being someone that caused them to look like a moron who believes everything they want to be true.

I have no shame in saying I saw something on TD. It's not like the information is written by a member, it's a great resource where stories from all over are posted and challenged to the point of confirming the validity.

SFP, best wishes for a long and happy life with Pox. Some would say that you out-kicked your coverage, I'll just say you are a very fortunate guy.

I have one friend that knows I post here regularly.

I'll see something as an MSN headline and tell her about it and first thing she will say is "I guess you saw that on TD".

I believe nothing on here without a link. Well except for Tigerpox investigative work. You can book it if pox writes it.
