I noticed there hasn't been a thread about Holder on here in a while. This will give some of y'all something new to bitch about him.

Seriously, though, props to Holder and the DOJ for ensuring all Americans are treated equally.

quote:

(CNN) -- In a major milestone for gay rights, the United States government plans to expand recognition of same-sex marriages in federal legal matters, including bankruptcies, prison visits and survivor benefits.

Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department will issue a memo Monday that recognizes same-sex marriages "to the greatest extent possible under the law."

The federal expansion will include 34 states where same-sex marriage isn't legal, but the new federal benefits being extended to those states will apply only where the U.S. government has jurisdiction, Holder said.

For example, a same-sex couple legally married in Massachusetts can now have their federal bankruptcy proceeding recognized in Alabama, even though it doesn't allow same-sex marriages. In the past, the U.S. government could challenge the couple's joint bankruptcy because Alabama doesn't recognize same-sex marriage.

Holder's announcement was revealed in an advance copy of a Saturday night speech at the Human Rights Campaign's gala in New York City. At its blog, the advocacy group cheered what it called a "landmark announcement" that it "will change the lives of countless committed gay and lesbian couples for the better."

The move affects how millions of Americans interact with their federal government, including bankruptcy cases, prison visitation rights, survivor benefits for police officers and firefighters killed on the job, and the legal right to refuse to testify to incriminate a spouse.

Holder compared his work for the gay rights cause to the 1960s civil rights struggle and then- Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy's support for equality.

He's responsible for mass murders. I can see why you want to celebrate him for undermining the law, again.

I agree with this move.. I believe ultimately that states should recognize contracts between two individuals but should be allowed to legally call them what they want as long as the protections and consequences granted within the contract are held to the same standard. Allow states a certain amount of autonomy while providing equality.

Great. Now gays can STFU and let the rest of us live our lives without having it shoved down our throat.

No because this is a money generating entity, they will have to move on to the next great affront to gay rights. ENDA or some other pain that needs to be resolved.

I don't. Marriage shouldn't be a Gov't issue. At all. Let religions allow/disallow unions as they have for thousands of years. If someone wants a "partner" whether same sex or opposite.. to have legal authority on issues,Ggt a lawyer and have a contract drawn up that courts will recognize. Stop with tax credits and every other form of Gov't issue having to do with "marriage".

The gay lobby will never retreat, as soon as gay marriage is legal nationwide in all 50 states and all churches are forced to perform gay marriages, they will find something else to fight about

The civil rights lobby didn't quit after Jim Crow laws were repealed, they still find battles to fight these days

Still perverts.

There will be a back lash, the question is when and how bad.

2 homosexuals in Holder & Obama.

How many times do you think you have to repeat something so blatantly absurd before it becomes true?
