BERKELEY, Calif. (AP) — California football player Ted Agu died Friday morning at age 21 after collapsing during a training run with his teammates.

"This is one of those tragedies that no one can understand and comprehend," an emotional coach Sonny Dykes said at a news conference hours after the death.

"Ted was a very special young man. As a coach, you have the opportunity to be around a lot of special kids day in and day out. He was a special young man. He just had a passion and energy for life that's contagious. He will be deeply missed. Our players loved him dearly and he was a big part of our family."

Agu was on a training run near Memorial Stadium with his teammates early Friday morning that was supervised by multiple members of the team's medical staff.

unknown at this time, but it'll probably be one of those undiagnosed heart conditions, like it usually is in these situations.

I'll never understand why people tell other people on a internet site they're "sending prayers." if you're gonna do just do it and not tell the whole world how holy you are.

i somewhat understand your point, but i believe it is really a way to encourage others as a reminder. it's just a support system perhaps.

yeah I should have said I understand if it's a poster who is in a bad situation but a person who doesn't post here and we don't know is just dumb.

This simply doesn't happen without taking energy drinks or something. When the heart gets artificially stimulated, it's not time to do endurance runs or sprints. Energy stuff is great for weight lifting but not running.

Tragic and sad, feel bad for the team and family.

These tragedies are largely unavoidable unless you mandate screening echos for all young athletes. These guys are asymptomatic and then have a cardiac arrest. Very sad

CBSSports.com, citing an unnamed source, had reported earlier Friday that Agu had sickle-cell trait, a condition that is the leading cause of death among NCAA Division I football players since 2000.
