Laptop
Had this issue on a friends laptop. The cable on the back of the screen had came loose somehow and was hanging in just enough to work but not light up all the way. Simple fix but I'm not saying that is what's wrong with yours. Just throwing a possibility out there.

Battery charger plugged in?
Check power saver options?
Pull power the remove battery. Let sit for 2 days.
Enjoy not being in front of your computer for two days.

Could be the backlight inverter. Either way, not too big a deal if you're comfortable disassembling your laptop. You can probably get the replacement part for under $20.
Or you could bring it into the shop, shouldn't be more than a couple hundred.
