What does a MacBook have that PC doesn't? Why does Apple 'just work' ?

Girlfriend's computer, Windows OS, is pretty slow after 3 or 4 years.
My MacBook is as fast as the day I bought it in 2009.
I understand downloading toolbars and the like will severely burden a Windows PC.
My question is, why doesn't a Mac succumb to the same, and why hasn't Microsoft found way to match Apple?
I will never buy another PC as long as I live. My entire office is run by Apple. What little I overpaid I have made back ten-fold through ease of use and lack of issues.
What magic has Apple uncovered?

Don't know. My bought my MacBook in 2008 and it runs like a champ today.

Primarily design decisions in the kernel and the implementation of a registry.
I'm not an expert so tifwiw.
Edit: windows update also is poorly designed and it eats up memory.

That's debatable. Paying $2,000 for a 15" laptop just sounds silly in 2014.

It's not what it has, it's what it doesn't have.
OSX is not encumbered with the requirement that it must work on an infinite number of hardware configurations. This results in a much more open and accessible system for drivers to plug into. It's "dirtier", but sort of necessary.
OSX is not encumbered with the requirement that it must (try to) support software designed to run on it 20 years ago. This results in a lot of leftover "cruft".

Macs are not designed for automatic obsolescence. Word is the guys who invented the PC also invented Disposable Razors & Smart Cars... they live in a disposable world.

I don't know. None of my PCs have ever 'slowed down.'
My MacBook is pretty glitchy though.

Ehhh my windows xp comp in the back runs fine. Ms enforces obsolescence by say limiting certain Microsoft products.
For example, windows internet explorer 9 and onward doesn't run on my xp system even though it has the hardware.
Cruft and old support stuff also is bad for the user.
edit: some of y'all may be confusing hard drive failure with system failure.

Everyone will just completely overlook your answer because they dont understand it. Apple "just works"
Its Apple vs MSFT in their eyes NOT
Apple vs Dell,ASUS,Acer,HP,Lenovo..........

The reason it "just works" is because of the operating system.
The back end is written much cleaner and efficiently. There are less holes and patches because Apple doesn't rush OS releases like MS does.
Apple also takes full control and only writes code for their software to work with very specific hardware. MS wants everyone to be able to work with them.
So while the Apple method is much more restrictive and doesn't allow much for customization, it prevents you from screwing it up.
MS is full of holes that are much easier to exploit and they give the unknowing end user more control to do damage to their system.
For the record, I'm typing this off of an iMac I purchased in late 2006. I've never had a single issue out of it and I use it almost daily. It only slowed down a bit after I installed MS office on it, however it's still as fast or faster than the brand new laptop I had at work running Win 7.

Well, your GF can probably buy two more Windows PCs over the next few years and have a newer updated product for what your 2009 Macbook costs and still be about even counting her current one.

Purchased an ASUS 5 years ago and thing still runs smooth.
A lot of peoples problem with PCs are that they go by these craptastic Walmart notebook specials with the lowest rated components inside of them and wonder why its slow as dirt. Software continuously requires more resources as technology moves on and their crap notebooks keeps getting slower.

Wanna know how I know you bought an underpowered Win7 laptop?

Your gf's computer was probably handled poorly and her HD has a bad block or two on it and a check disk has not been run ever.
