Just wondering if any of you think the Olympics could be a thing of the past in another 10-12 years from now. With all the cost involved with construction and security, I don't see how any country would want to go to the trouble of putting it on.

Do you think there will be no, little or major violence (terrorists) in the motherland's games?

It all depends on how it is managed. The olympics can be a net positive for a region that already has the infrastructure and accommodations in place but it is clear that Sochi did not/does not and it's looking like a big clusterfug there. Security is also a much bigger issue in that area vs almost anywhere else in the Western world.

I read a fascinating article in the WSJ (yesterday) about the concerns of sponsors. If TV audiences are small they will lose money. One paragraph really caught my eye. I shall paraphrase from memory:

"Sponsors have produced two sets of commercials. One set has been expensively produced with lots of visual effects and an upbeat sales pitch. The backup set has been produced very inexpensively expressing a sombre compassionate message of condolences. This backup set will only be shown if there is a successful terrorist attack that kills a lot of people. "

Either that or it will be scaled back tremendously and held in existing venues.

Think about how much it costs to build a modern stadium. Olympics usually call for building from scratch a modern stadium, several arenas, and other expensive facilities - then they have to be top notch because of the affinity.

Montreal is still paying off their 1976 Olympics.

As much as people give Atlanta (mostly BS) crap about our Olympics, we didn't go broke over it due to either using existing facilities (e.g. the Georgia Dome and GWCC) or finding post-Games uses for the new ones (Olympic Stadium = Turner Field, Swimming venue and dorms given to Tech, etc.), which is what Los Angeles in 1984 did as well.

It should be hosted in countries that can already afford it.

No need to go into debt for this event.

If that means its hosted in the U.S. more often because we already have the facilities and infrastucture, so be it

maybe the winter olympics but not the summer. That is big business.

its such a prestige thing, countries/cities will go into debt to host it. Why would it go away, if nationstates are willing to foot the bill?

And I doubt there is a terrorist attack at sochi. I am sure the russians have that shite locked down, and will just kill anyone they view as a threat.

I think you will see a definite backlash after this Olympics. Especially after it is hit with suicide bombing black widows.

From a hotel menu in Sochi yesterday. I advise visitors to try the "arse cakes."

(For the non-Russian speakers, the Russian language version says "assortment of pastries.")

Reality is they've done a terrible job promoting the story lines in the past 3 olympics. They spend all their time promoting uninteresting sports like speed skating and figure skating, and don't not enouhg on more mainstream sports like Hockey, Bobsled, and Skiing. That and professional athletes are not as interesting as the amateurs. I remember Ray LeBlanc who was the US team olympic goalie when I was a kid. Dude worked at a coca-cola bottling plant in the offseason and his hands were all messed up from stopping high speed pucks.

Do you really believe anyone would go into debt for this event?
It sounds like those sports team owners who bitch and moan about how much money they're losing but yet they have no intentions of ridding themselves of those teams.
No business owner successful enough to afford a sports franchise would be that dumb.

LA and Atlanta were definitely exceptions. 'Merica!

As I read on another board, Sochi is about the size of Jacksonville, FL. They have no future need for all of this crap.

Sochi was awarded the Olympics because of full on corruption. They beat out Salzberg, Austria, which already had the infrastructure and the facilities (think Denver, Colorado and surroundings).

Plus its in the middle of the frickin' Alps. Sochi has beaches.

Russian, do you think there is a high likelihood of terrorist attack or is this just the story line to grab interest, or Putin's weird attempt at showing the world he is in control of his territory (when nothing happens)?

Biggest issue with this olympics... I don't see how something doesn't take place.

Whoever was responsible for that should run for president. No doubt that he would have the resume for economics to run a country.

Yes. Probably on the perimeter of the area just because security is so tight in the Olympic village itself. Maybe another attack in Volgograd (the former Stalingrad). Or in neighboring Dagastan.
