Pillcam: a pill that I can swallow instead of getting blasted up the arse

There are few medical procedures feared more than a colonoscopy. But what if there was another way to screen patients for colon cancer that's much less intrusive?
Now there is: The PillCam, an ingestible camera that takes high-speed photographs as it works its way through the digestive system and helps doctors spot polyps and other early signs of colon cancer was just cleared by the Food and Drug Administration.
The device is designed for patients who have had trouble with the cringe-inducing colonoscopy procedure, which involves probing the large intestine with a tiny camera embedded in a four-foot long, flexible tube.

The FDA on Monday cleared the company's PillCam Colon for patients who have experienced an incomplete colonoscopy.

So you still have to undergo a colonoscopy first. Disappoint.

The big question is why the FDA only approved this for a certain class of patients. Either it is safe or it isn't. I think the advantages of more guys getting checked would well offset any dangers. The tube in the arse is no joke from what I hear.

Wang notes that Given's PillCam costs $500, significantly less than the roughly $4,000 rate for colonoscopy. Eventually, she thinks doctors may use the device to attract adults who avoid regular screenings due to fears of pain, embarrassment and general discomfort.

The colonoscopies still produce better images for the GI's to read, thus lowering their chance of missing a polyp/cancer and later getting sued. But some people simply can't tolerate the procedure, so this is an alternative that is better than nothing.
REAL TALK:
Plus, GI's make WAY more money from the facility and professional fees for scoping a patient than they would with each pillcam. $220-$260 profit on the pillcams VS >$1000 profit on the colons. No chance in hell medical lobbyist would allow this to become a primary screening tool over the colonoscopies with that financial impact.
This tech is actually about 10 years old and is a non-invasive way to look for chrones, ulcerative colitis, or active bleeding. But this ruling allows us to use it as a colon cancer screening tool for people who physically can't undergo a colonoscopy. That's never been an option before.

The prep is the shitty part.

It's not the actual colonoscopy but what you go through the night before that blows.

Since I first learned of colonoscopy as a teenager I've been patiently waiting for this breakthrough.
For the love of God hurry up science.

Yeah frick that... Its the preparing for the procedure than the actual test itself.

It all has to do with the studies that were submitted for review. If they can't show in the study that the pill cam is at least up to par or better than a colonoscopy at detecting colon cancer, the FDA won't approve it as a primary screening tool.

Colonoscopy PSA:
You do NOT have to drink a 1/2 gallon of sludge anymore.
Just a 10oz drink. Ask your doc.

Colonoscopy is not tough. The prep sucks terribly, but I bet you still have to go through the cleanse to use this too, so you are really still going to experience the worst part.
I would rather get the colonoscopy so you can get the good drugs and have hilariously long farts in front of doctors and nurses that have to try to not laugh at it.

Can a camera remove a polyp? No it cant dumbass. Then you will have to have a colonoscopy anyway

This isn't for your typical "don't want" a colonoscopy, it's for people who for various reasons can't/shouldn't have one. For example, my brother, who has Chrohns disease along with an abnormally shaped colon-they had to abort his first colonoscopy because there was no way to do it. He had a VERY painful barium enema instead-this opens the option to him instead of a hugely painful, invasive procedure.
And if need be, polyps etc, can be removed via laparoscopy for those who again CANT have a typical scope-not those who just don't wanna

Do I have to wait until I'm older, or can I go ahead and opt for this now?

What I was thinking.
If they find something via the pill, would seem the patient would still need to get scoped anyway.
