I'm thinking bad, lots of accidents. I envision a field day for attorneys though, so for them I guess it'll be good.

Oh, and my futurist prediction....driverless one person pods based on something sorta like a Segway. Get in it, enter your destination and there ya go. All electric of course.

I love driving, but I would gladly give it up if it meant not potentially being killed by the HWY 90 natives everyday.

I can't imagine driverless cars being any more dangerous than cars operated by the average person with a license.

Why? Many cars on the road already intervene automatically, hitting the brakes and whatnot. And fully self-driving cars have been being tested for a while now with no incidents.

They won't be commonplace until they have been proven to be nearly 100% accident-free.

A computer never drives drunk, loses focus, or otherwise gets distracted from the task at hand.

I realize this is a joke, but I think this is Google's goal. They lose lots of potential ad views while people are driving.

Many is a bit of an exaggeration, no?

I believe the first step will be driverless interstates. Some sort of system where the major interstates have a track or GPS based guidance and you drive to the on-ramp, set your destination and it merges you in and takes you to the exit ramp at your destination. This would be pretty simple compared to programming cars to drive in town. I would be completely for this too. It would be great to be able to nap or read a book between Baton Rouge and Shreveport. As far as giving up my ability to control my car in town. No thanks. Watch iRobot if you want to see their version of this system.

this is the opposite of the truth

but your reactionary fear and rejection of technology is entirely consistent with your posting history vis a vis science and facts

You're still miffed, and stumped, about the elephant-pine tree thing aren't you? Guesses and suppositions?

I love the idea of getting in my car and knowing that no dumbass on the road would be causing an accident by driving recklessly and traffic jams could be ultimately eliminated. It would be really nice to just relax and read a book on my trips from Houston back to Louisiana too. It would cause potential problems because when something did go wrong it could be worse than human error.

It would suck, seeing as how safety regulated they'd be and you probably wouldn't be able to go more than like 5 mph over the speed limit.

I change my mind. This would rock.

Well they certainly have a lot of catching up to do if they want to be as good on the roads as the typical Louisiana driver.

I brought this up on the poli board and got flamed for it - but driverless technology would ruin the careers of 40 to 50 million people in the transportation field, such as truck drivers, package delivery drivers, cabbies, etc. Would that really be a great thing considering how our unemployment is at record highs already? I understand that most would get other jobs and such, but just wiping out a profession without any amazing goal such as less pollution, faster transit, etc. would be just pointless to me. Plus I'm not the type to have an amazing dependency on the internet/cell phones like most in Gen Y are, I'm in my mid 30's and kinda starting to feel like my dad and just want to go live in the country and off the grid.

Where are you getting this number? I have a hard time believing there are 50 million people employed as truck drivers and cab drivers...
