For those who haven't heard of him, Ben Holiday Dorcy III (known as Lovey)is the world's oldest roadie. He is somewhat of a legend. He started out in 1950 and is still on the road today (mostly with Randy Rogers...and these days he smokes his pipe and naps in the front lounge).
quote:
Ben started as a Roadie in 1950 with Hank Thompson. Over his career he has worked for Patsy Cline, Buck Owens, Elvis Presley, John Wayne, Webb Pierce, Johnny Cash, Kenny Rogers, Kris Kristofferson, Brooks & Dunn, Waylon Jennings and Willie Nelson.
A bunch of bands have started getting together every year to honor him. The lineup this year is really good, including Jamey Johnson, Josh Abbott, Evan Felker (Turnpike Troubadours), Wade Bowen, and others. Randy is emceeing but I'm not sure if he'll play or not. Should be awesome
Lovey and me :)

Kafka-- I still don't know when John Wayne went on tour, but I learned last night that Lovey drove his tour bus. He was also the first inductee into the Roadie Hall of Fame. Waylon Jennings wrote a song about him that was never released, called "Ode to Ben Dorcy"...they played it over footage from the upcoming documentary about Lovey's life. Such a cool night celebrating the best roadie ever. And all the proceeds are going to pay for his assisted living.
