The abortion rate in the United States dipped to its lowest since 1973

The abortion rate in the United States dipped to its lowest since 1973, coinciding with a steep decline in overall pregnancy and birth rates, a study from a nonprofit sexual health organization showed on Sunday.
The rate declined to 16.9 abortions per 1,000 women between the ages of 15 and 44 in 2011, the latest year studied, which was well below the 1981 peak of 29.3 per 1,000 and the lowest since 1973 when the rate was 16.3 per 1,000, the study from Guttmacher Institute showed.
"With abortion rates falling in almost all states, our study did not find evidence that the national decline in abortions during this period was the result of new state abortion restrictions. We also found no evidence that the decline was linked to a drop in the number of abortion providers during this period," says Rachel Jones, lead author of the study.
The decline in abortions coincided with a drop in overall pregnancy and birth rates, and contraceptive use and methods improved during the period, Jones said. The recent recession also led many women and couples to want to avoid or delay pregnancy and childbearing.
The study also found that the total number of abortion providers declined by only 4 percent between 2008 and 2011, and the number of clinics, which provide the large majority of abortion services, declined by just 1 percent.
While the overall abortion rate declined, the proportion of abortions that were early medication procedures continued to increase, according to the study.
An estimated 239,400 early medication abortions were performed in 2011, representing 23 percent of all nonhospital abortions, an increase from 17 percent in 2008. The study estimated that 59 percent of all known abortion providers offer this service.
It's crazy what happens when you provide women with birth control and proper sexual education.
Less abortions.
Choice we can all get behind!

Does this mean we can expect a crime wave in 18 years or so?

We were actually discussing pregnancy rates with one of our professors the other day and you know one of the coolest things I learned?
There is a decrease in teen pregnancy that coincides with the production of the show 16 and Pregnant.
Yes, those shows are a positive influence.

Beat me to it.
I think we've aborted the type of people who are prone to abortions anyway.

So, I guess this is now the new statistic that accurately predicts the recession, and I guess its still going.....

The Bible beaters don't like contraception either. Complete abstinence until marriage, after which the wife spits out 15 kids. It's the only way.

Don't worry. In their world, proliferation of guns caused drop in violent crime over the same time period, but I'm sure they'll turn a blind eye to this one.

Oh I'm pretty sure we won't see the usual anti-abortion types in this thread.

This has zero to due with a decrease in abortion. In fact, if this were true it would mean a rise in abortions.

Does the study take into account all the babies that were aborted due to abortifacient birth control?
ETA: I bet RU486 (are you for 86'ing), aka morning after pill played a significant role on the reduction of traditional abortion. BTW, the regular pill is an abortifacient. It does not allow the fertilized egg to attach to the uterine wall.

I think the best thing the Pro-Life movement can do is move away from abstinence only, and focus on preventing conception in the first place.
Once there is less use for abortion, people may start viewing as less of a necessary evil.

I say this often.
But they are more afraid that their daughters might want sex...then making sure they understand the consequences.

There's a stigma to abortion just like there is a stigma attached to smoking. Probably has a lot to do with the drop.

People need to understand that wanting sex is human nature. It's good to teach abstinence until marriage, of course, because that's being responsible. It's smart to teach that if you do have sex, at least do it responsibly.
I wonder if there is a direct affect on number of abortion dropping being due to the genes of people who would have abortions, not being carried on. It's mostly poor people and low lifes who have abortion (at least from the people I've seen that do it). So by allowing abortion you're basically encouraging Darwinism..eventually the undesirables will be weeded out for the most part due to the ending of a gene pool, so over time abortion rates would drop.
