I took the kids to visit the new library in BR at Independence Park. It's a huge new building and a very nice design. But as my daughter pointed it out - it's full of the same old books as the old library, it got me to thinking - was this multi-million dollar city investment really worth it?

Especially now in the age of the instant information via internet, kindles, nooks and online books/magazines - is it really worth it to build new libraries?

A nice library is arguably a very important public service

a lot of people still do not have access to these things, and can only gain them through the library's services

I agree Bayou IF they're updated and have new/current material. We have a nice, newer library (<10 years old) and the kids can't find SQUAT when they have to find a "library source" for term papers, research projects, etc. We end up having to go to the library in Lafayette and even there, there are slim pickings.

Most anything that promotes scholarly learning is a good thing, but I'm afraid that sometimes it's throwing pearls before swine.
There are many aspects of modern culture which are anti-learning and it's a shame.

I absolutely love libraries and think everyone should know how to use them. Including how to do research without electronic assistance.

One is currently being constructed here. It will have one square foot of space for each person in the parish. A huge waste of money IMO when most books can be found on e-readers and research is mostly done on the Internet

Several people don't have access to these. The library provides a great community service, also for hard to find books.

It all depends on the community IMO. The one in my neighborhood probably doesn't get as much use as the neighborhood I work in that has a larger portion of community members without regular internet access. It also serves as a community hub for meetings and they have some pretty good after-school programs as well as read-aloud programs for younger kids. It's become one of our biggest non-district resources when it comes to our kids filling out high school applications that have gone completely online as well. And in a shitty neighborhood it gives some kids a place to go.

Some libraries are adapting to the internet age by offering two week checkouts for books on eReaders as long as you're a member (I do this pretty often for short reads). And frankly, some texts (depending on your library) are better in their tactile form. Especially historical ones if your library has access to that.

I still think they're a worthwhile venture. Anything that helps educate a community is a worthwhile venture. I don't see them as a thing of the past as long as they're able to adapt to the move away from paperback books.

I personally believe all are, but that is just my opinion.

The local library system here has teamed up in a 5 parish area and you can actually rent ebooks from their online service as well as MP3 music and books on tape. Also, if you go into any of the libraries in these 5 parishes you can rent from them. No need to be restricted to your local parish library only. It's pretty nice.

My local one also rents out tablets and laptops for a week at a time to people that otherwise might not have access to such things. It's great for kids that might need them for school work but their families can't afford them.

A guy that works for me goes and checks out DVDs all of the time since he cut the cord on cable. They have all of the latest movies and TV series.

Pretty awesome IMO.
