So, I've put in for a job transfer within my own company that will allow me some flexibility with moving.

I'm currently in the South Texas area (Corpus Christi metro area) and I don't care for it much here to be honest.

I could have stayed here a long time with the work they had on the books but I didn't want to get locked into any real estate here. Anyway, I opted to take an offshore assignment (pay will wind up being about the same give or take so that wasn't part of the consideration)

Obviously since I'm offshore it won't really matter where I live. I'm contemplating between Houston/Austin/New Orleans and trying to weigh the pros and cons of each.

Obviously in TX I'll have no state income tax but higher property taxes when I buy. New Orleans offers a much shorter commute to the helicopter ride but I can deal with a road trip every couple weeks so it's not that big of a deal. I have some concerns about owning property very close to the coast because of hurricanes which is making Austin look more appealing. If I was offshore while a hurricane hit there wouldn't be much I could do about protecting my property.

What would you do in my situation?

Some other considerations:

I have friends in New Orleans (here too, but I don't like the place)

Some immediate family in Houston

Don't know anyone in Austin but it's the only place on the list I haven't had much time to explore and I do like the idea of getting to know a new city

I'd say Houston. Better job opportunities if you want to get back in an office after awhile. You can always drive few hours to Austin.

That's one of the things I thought of. If I ever want to get out of the construction management business there will be a ton of opportunities in Houston for me.

That's looking like the leader right now but I have plenty of time to think about it.

What's odd is the real estate in Corpus is probably more expensive than Austin or Houston.

Agreed that CC sucks but it is one of the top growing markets in the country.

The only reason I would consider buying here is that real estate could make a surge over the next few years. But I hate looking at a place to live from a pure investment perspective. I'd like to enjoy where I live.

So it's looking like Houston is probably the more logical choice as I'll occasionally have to report to an engineering office on the west side.

Would you advise trying to stay within the city of Houston or look into the suburbs like Katy?
