Europeans work to live; Americans live to work.
So it depends on your perspective. If your purpose in life is to enjoy living, the European way is the best.
If your purpose in life is to make as much money as possible and acquire things, the American way is the best.
I prefer the European way, myself, but I am in the minority here, I am sure.

This is working out great in Europe with the 25%+ unemployment rate in Spain or the Greece debt crisis.
