We’ve just signed an agreement to sell Motorola to Lenovo for $2.91 billion. As this is an important move for Android users everywhere, I wanted to explain why in detail.

We acquired Motorola in 2012 to help supercharge the Android ecosystem by creating a stronger patent portfolio for Google and great smartphones for users. Over the past 19 months, Dennis Woodside and the Motorola team have done a tremendous job reinventing the company. They’ve focused on building a smaller number of great (and great value) smartphones that consumers love. Both the Moto G and the Moto X are doing really well, and I’m very excited about the smartphone lineup for 2014. And on the intellectual property side, Motorola’s patents have helped create a level playing field, which is good news for all Android’s users and partners.

Why is this good for android users? I get that Motorola has a large patent portfolio but it makes it sound like Google is keeping some of it. Motorola is in desperate need to try to get their phones on the same page as one another.

It will be interesting to see what Lenova plans to do with Motorola now, if they will try to enter the tablet market with the old xoom or if they will go in a different direction.

By the way, Google lost about 8 or 9 billion on selling Motorola.

Because market competition is always a good thing.

Google only bought Motorola for it's patents more than anything, and to help the company out.

Lenovo is the top PC brand and a tech giant, it's a win win for both as Google already is partnered with the other top PC brand Asus who make the Nexus 7 and 10 for Google.

Whether or not Lenovo can compete with Samsung and Apple....idk.

Google put out a few phones while they had Moto but their Nexus phone was made by someone else. I see this as a cheap investment for Lenova in buying a big name company on the cheap, comparatively speaking.

Right, to keep them relevant so they could sell the company down the line like they just did.

LG makes their Nexus phones, Asus makes their tablets.

Which is exactly what Google wanted, the biggest highest rated PC company and tech giant is now able to get into the smartphone and tablet market and create another challenger to Samsung and Apple while Google gets to keep all of Motorola's patents that saved them billions and billions.

It's a win win.

Win win,

I love when people try and talk about tech like they understand something.

First of all LG made the last two round of Nexus phones Samsung before that. LG will likely not be making the next Nexus phones if the program is still around. There are reports that it will be cancelled since they have the Google Play edition devices.

They sold this company because they bought Nest and they will now use them to make hardware since they are better at it.

What sucks is that google made all these promises about what they were going to do with Motorola as recent as 6 months ago and now its over.

Lenovo makes cheap shite that doesn't hold up and at and they have horrible customers service.

This was not a win but likely won't hurt because google has tons of money, but this is another example of google dropping another product that people depend on or they have developed.

Its very ironic that they made this big deal that they were making these phones in the USA then turn around and sell it to a asian company. thanks google

Lenovo bought the world's best laptop and turned it into a very average computer.

The Chinese are not known for expert management when it comes to high tech.

Which is exactly what I said, considering I owned the Nexus 4 and currently own the Nexus 5.

The program likely won't be, but if it is it will still be LG.

Motorola didn't make hardware for Google.

Lenovo is the largest and highest rated PC maker in the world.

No offense, but can you back that up?

The ThinkPads were awesome and they reminded so shortly after Lenovo took over, but I haven't seen the technical dominance from the recent models.

Ok so that is not what you said anyway since you own them I guess that makes you an expert. You, I guess didn't read all the reports of disappointment in the Nexus 4 yield rates and phone quality. The only reason why LG made the nexus 5 was because they had a contract to make two.

This all doesn't matter because Google will be moving away from Android in favor of Chrome OS which will be made by Google with the assistance of the company they bought Nest.

Well actually they did the Moto X was touted as a phone built with the close guidance of Google. The idea appeared that they would eventually make google phones - then the Moto X flopped

Read my question again-

"highest rated"

I don't dispute their market share.
