Louisiana Contractors License and starting a business

I'll try to keep this short and sweet.
I have a degree in Construction Management from LSU and I am leaning more and more into the idea of starting my own business. Right now I have a good job with a large industrial contractor, but it has always been a goal of mine to work for myself (along with everyone else in the world I'm sure). I'm 25 and married with no kids so I figure if I'm going to make the leap, now it the time.
For anyone that has recently applied for or secured a license, can you give me some cliff notes on how the process went? Did you already have a company before starting the licensing process? I am interested in the Commercial HVAC market in particular, and hope to eventually branch off into other markets.
As far as starting a business of this nature in general, can anyone recommend a book or something that I can use to help develop a basic plan? I have a business minor and a pretty good understanding of business in general, but I definitely don't know enough to start one. I just bought Dave Ramsey's book "Entreleadership" because I am a pretty big fan of Dave's work, but I am sure it will only skim the surface of what I need to know.
I appreciate any info I can get from the members of this board.

Commercial license test is easy Business test will require studying since they ask things you wouldn't know unless you have the study guide (like how many spots on the board does the governor appoint). HVAC test will require some studying as well. There are study guides on Internet.
Good luck
Good luck

great market to be in the next 10 yrs

Commercial HVAC
not a great market to enter
If you dont have a plan already established and several potential clients lined up I would wait. Most of the guys that I know that have decided have try their own thing almost always return in a couple yrs.

this test should consist of reading plans and figuring out where HVAC should go. Then ignoring plans, watch the building go up, and then figure out where you can cut and furr to install HVAC irrespective of plans.

Some advice that I'm sure you won't want to hear: At age 25, you don't have the experience needed to run a construction business - even a small one.

So much truth to that statement.
