My son, 22 years old, wants to get a job with one of the boat companies. He has no marine experience, but would like to get a position and work his way up to mate and ultimately captain. In other words, make a career uot of it.

Can anyone give him some insight into this as a job and career?

He will have to start as a deck hand.

All boat companies are hiring deckhands right now.

If he has no experience then he would only be able to apply for entry level "deckhand" positions. I'm not sure how for you guys live from Bayou Lafourche but I would definitely take a ride if possible. Lots of companies on the bayou.

He can try any of the tug boat companies (Crosby, Smith) or Crewboat companies. Im not sure what he will have to do to start out. Im a field engineer for a derrick barge company in Houma, he can apply to be a rigger or oiler on the derrick barge and get some semi-related experience. We use tugs and crew boats everyday when we are offshore so he could at least see the work being done.

Harvey just bought all of Callais stuff. Might want to look there --they now have a huge corner of the crewboat/workboat market.

I thought Harvey bought some of GOLs crewboats? I know the repainted and renamed some of them and they are now Harvey's colors.

HGIM bought 5 crew boats from GOL, but those are more like 180'-225' crew/supply boats. Very specialize boats.

My son lives in NOLA.

How does the process work as for as moving up in the industry. I understand that there is licensing by the Coast Guard. Do you need a certain amount of experience to sit for the tests?

What are the pros and cons of being on an offshore boat versus an inland tug?

easiest thing for your son to do if he wants to work his way up to captain is go to a maritime school. he is at a good age where he can go to the academy and get out in 4 years, minimum 3 depending on whether or not he already has a degree.

he will come out of the academy with a 3rd mates license (unlimited tonnage). its not cheap but the hawse pipe route isnt the way to go anymore.

depends what kind of boat he is working on. cadets coming out of the academy with their 3rd mate license are getting blue water jobs making 6 figures from the get go. (not everyone but its common to get a job that pays like that)

To apply, he will need a few pre-requisites:
1) does he have criminal record?
2) is he currently on probation?
3) does he have a tattoo on his face or neck?
4) is he paying child support
5) can he pass a drug test (hair follicle)?

if he can answer yes to all of the above he is an automatic hire. If any of these is a no, then he needs to get serious

so if he has everything but a neck tattoo you would highly recommend visiting a tattoo parlor on rampart st to get inked up?
