I was reading a CNN article about the winter storm where a correspondent was interviewing Atlanta mayor Kasim Reed. The interviewer asked if he felt Atlantans were angry with him regarding all of the gridlock and horror stories about people being stuck in cars for 12 hours.

How in the world can the people of Atlanta blame one man? How about taking care of yourselves, your students, and your employees?

I feel like we've become collectively moronic as a society. We had the forecasts staring us right in the face. It's not the mayor's fault that everyone went to work and school. It's those organization's fault for looking out the window Tuesday morning and saying "yep, no snow. everything's peachy. everyone come to work."

This was not difficult to see coming. All day, I was wondering if the decision to not close UGA on Tuesday was going to come back to bite them. Thank goodness we're in Athens and the traffic load is nowhere near as bad as a city like Atlanta.

The pressure to be uber-productive doesn't help either. Tuesday should have been an easy call for organizations to call the day off. Instead, our super-smart, technology-blessed, science-savvy society ignored modern science and technology and based their decision off of a cursory glance at the sky.

One thing I learned after moving to Ark. from Monroe about 30 years ago - stay the hell home when the ice shows up. Most businesses and schools close their doors and send folks home when the first snowflake or frozen raindrop hits. It's a system that works pretty well when the highway departments are overwhelmed.

They pay taxes. It wouldn't be that difficult to pickup the phone and request salt trucks as the situation appeared to deteriorate. We've gotten them from St. Louis and Nashville during the more extreme storms before. That being said....everyone was caught off guard for this.

I'd be more angry at the weather forcasters that were off the mark.

Disagree. Like I said, the forecasts we're staring everyone in the face.

Every weather forecast I looked at was predicting the snow not hitting until mid-morning.

Carol Costello was the interviewer and she spent her entire 9AM-11AM show on Atlanta traffic coverage and "who should be singled out for blame". Then Ashleigh Banfield took over at 11 and spent the next hour continuing the bashing . Three straight hours of NOT overall Southern Storm coverage, but Atlanta-only coverage.(Yes, I know they are broadcasting from Atlanta.)

After CNN's very disturbing post-SOTU "performance" last night, guess even Zucker was embarrassed and told them to change the subject this morning.

It really is amazing. Obviously CNN is hitting it harder because they are in ATL...but just look at yesterday in BR, everyone was complaining when it didn't hit. Its a damned-if-you-do, damned-if-you-dont situation for the cities and schools to decide to close things.

But as you said, even if they stay open...take control of YOUR life and either call in sick, don't bring your kids to school etc. You can watch and read the weather forecasts yourself.

What is the city supposed to do when a whole populace panics like that?

Well, the roads should have been salted before the employees & schools were released and jammed up the roads. Also, they put in requirements after the 2011 debacle requesting 18 wheelers put chains on their rigs under these conditions but they are unsure what time the signs went up telling those rigs about this requirement or if all roads entering the area had signs at all. Schools were released when the storm began despite weather reports stating it would hit between 11-2.

Seems like there really was some errors there.

People aren't bitching at the government. People who spend 18 hours in their car are going to be mad about something tho.

Reed seems like a pretty sharp guy & he is doing fine.

I agree. I was at the office at 10AM proclaiming that they were wrong, there's nothing going to happen. Then boom. I'm not blaming anybody. Just what happens when a city gets hit once every three years by a snow storm.

Next time, maybe they'll pre-treat.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. When you have several million people crowded into one area, you'll have a few complainers.

there is no excuse for a government not being ready, especially when we had a trial run last week.

Idk about atl but here in Jackson, they have been saying since sat that there was a chance of an ice storm on tuesday and wed and to make preparations. School and business could have gotten on the internet and looked at the radar and saw that the shite was hitting the fan ans called everybody and told them to stay home or sent them home earlier.

Yes, exactly. It's one thing to be skeptical about a 36, 24, or even a 12-hour forecast. But when you're waking up on Tuesday morning at 6:00 and the forecasts are literally saying "yo, shits gonna hit in a few hours. 80-100% chance of precipitation" it's time to start taking precautions and having a better plan of action than sending folks home when it starts coming down.

shite if you had watched the weather channel( which is in Atlanta) they would had seen them talk about the snow and ice that The Atl was gonna get. So now the Mayor and other leaders all point fingers elsewhere. Just like their dear President has taught them. But hey,no harm no foul , only a couple dead a 100 or so hurt. Of course I'm not suprise when you see what's running that city.

Didn't know Kasim Reed was mayor of Cobb, North Fulton, and Gwinnett. Learn something new every day.

It's retarded. People seem to really be lashing out against Reed and Deal on social media.

Deal announced a state of emergency yesterday right when the snow hit the metro area. I don't understand what else they could have done. Deal can shut down interstates and state roads but people will still drive on and get stranded on back roads. He certainly can't shut down schools

the only people pointing fingers are the morons who disregarded the warnings, aka the general public.

I agree that everyone played a part in their bad choices, but the mayor and other elected officials most certainly share part of the blame. Right now ,not one official that I've seem says they made any mistakes. Sad part is I guess people such ( by your own statement) as your self don't blame the government for not having schools closed, sand ready and roads closed . It's just the dumb citizens fault. I say they all to blame.

I know you weren't responding to me but in the ATL metro area one person can't close down all the schools, all the roads, and salt/sand every single road.

The metro area is made up of half a dozen counties and a lot of individual municipalities that operate independently.

They all made similar administrative decisions. So either they were all incompetent (probably not true) or this was just a disaster that would have been nearly impossible to mitigate.
