Is a 5 year old 5500 watt portable generator (Briggs & Stratton engine) that has seized up worth anything? Is it worth fixing if I don’t plan on using it after it is repaired (getting a whole house backup generator)? Or should I just put it out by the road and let someone else deal with it?

It seized up last year after it ran for about 5 minutes. I was inside when it happened so I'm not sure how it happened. Yes, it had and still has oil in it so I’m not sure why it seized in the first place.

Virtually everyone has a generator in south Louisiana and Mississippi due to hurricanes so a whole home unit isn't uncommon. I know several people who do.

Somebody will give you a case of beer for it or something.

It just needs an engine and there's plenty of people out there who don't mind doing that kind of thing.

Is a whole house generator really worth the $$ and the req maintenance? I have a 5kw generator that will power a fridge, a TV, and a small window unit plus I have a gas stove for cooking. I my fam can get by for a few days easy and be relatively comfortable. If the power is gonna be out for longer than that then i am getting the frick out of dodge.

It would be close all at once but i would alternate the fridge and the window unit.
