I have been meaning to shoot him an email or get him on here as to inquire his thoughts on this season and future ones. However after reading this article I pretty much have my answers.

LINK

A good article.

Reynolds, how long do you think until the shortened season and limits will be will be put into effect? I have some buddies in the grain shipping business who have told me in the past 2-3 years every piece of land no matter how marginal has been put back into crops throughout the grain belt region, especially in the Dakotas. From some of the things I have read a lot of biologist are expecting the ducks numbers to drop fast and hard. Are yal thinking next year is a possibility? 2-3 years away?

Thanks for the hard work, keep it up.

Just read that article, and was coming here to post it. Going to be interesting to see what happens to waterfowl hunting as we know it in the next few years

fwiw.. i talked to several hunters that hunt prime spots - that has their worst seasons in 20-30 years..

others.. well....

I don't know if the present day waterfowling industry will allow us to go back to 3 and 30...

I am diff okay with a reduction in limits. Days are a little tough for me bc I dont get to hunt enough as it is. If the season starts latter I can work with 40 days to hunt.

it has been long proven.. days open leads to more harvest than higher limits..

Are the birds staying up north due to planting, or are the populations that low?

if you asking my opine..

migration patterns changing due to changing habitat - biggest culrpits

hunters that are paying farmers a lot of money to keep fields ducky...

and no till farming.

I still contend the birds just arent coming here in the numbers they use to. Places that 10 years ago didnt have much to speak of in the way of ducks are now covered up in them. TX, OK, even COL has damn good duck hunting now. I have a pic somewhere of 10-15K mallards sitting by the Snake River in Idaho the day after new years last year while its in single digit temps. That happens in all the states north of us. Check out the outfitters in KA or MO, they have been murdering the birds all through this cold snap.

Pop will be that low soon though.

Also what CPic just said, changing in farming practices and hybrid seeds have done a lot.

I've got about 100 green heads that stay in the lakes in my neighborhood all year. Some of the neighbors killed a few because they were shitting on everything. LDWF says they are legal to kill all year because they aren't migratory. Anybody want in?

another factor some are complaining about..

with the rise of everyone having a mud motor.. many places were ducks used to rest... they no longer rest...

also... farmer gene has 2500 acres... 30 years ago he had 10 blinds on property... now he has 30 or more...

and people wonder why ducks pile up on refuges.

If we scare them up will they cup back into the decoys pretty? I am sure the neighbors wont mind the shooting and duck calling.

You can hunt them in your truck. Damn things won't move. I've had to wait a couple minutes while 30-40 of them cross the street. One guy's dog almost died from eating the duck shite so he went after them pretty hard with a pellet gun. They are repopulating quickly though

So, we went from a record number of ducks a few months ago to there aren't any ducks and we need to go 30 and 3?
