Starting a card collection for my son...Harper or Trout?

My son is 9 months old and I want to pass on my card collection to him when he gets older. I want to get him a nice collection of one of the young up and comers, who has the ability to sustain a long, productive career.

It is so hard to know if a guy will be good for a number of years, or if he will be a flash in the pan. I think Harper and Trout both have potential but with the prices on their cards being so high, I can only afford to collect one of them.

Which is the safer of the two? I'm looking at this like an investment.

TIA

Would be really costly to get both. Harper's 2011 Bowman Chrome card is $350. There are so many card now that it's hard to keep up.

Collecting is more than that...sure, it is nice to have cards that are worth large amounts of money, but if it's something that me and my boy can do together, then it becomes priceless.

Buy the topps factory set.

My father has every topps factory set from 1982 to today. Some pretty decent cards in that run.

I want to lean Harper but Teout is just sick! Hopefully both guys have wonderful careers and this discussion becomes moot. I already have a handful of Harper cards, so I might as well just keep rolling with him.

not true, the hobby is quite healthy. They produce lots of autographed and low numbered cards that hold value quite well.
