Yes, this shite again. iPod Dock to home theater and sound quality.

I have tried the headphone jack to RCA Jack. Sound had an audible buzz/hum when at a decent to only slightly loud listenable volume.
What Dock gets you the closest to CD player sound quality? I am playing on an Onkyo that is just a mid range price. What Dock should I be looking at? A google search just yields some muddled info with crutchfield adds.

Airport Express or Apple TV and use Airplay.

The quality of the file you are playing has a major role in this. I can hook up my iPod to my Onkyo using the iPod usb. Onkyo also sells a doc specific to apple products.

I would not get a dock because that tethers you to the dock.

It sure does but I can use the reciever remote to navigate through all the files on the iPod. The interface appears on the tv just as it would on the iPod. If you want to walk around with the iPod then obviously a doc is not a good option.

I hated using a TV remote to navigate a music collection. I hated having to turn on a TV to select music to play. This goes back years starting with Windows Media Center. I've owned several docks, and buying an Apple TV for Airplay was a revelation. The Remote App will control iTunes on your PC, and you can play local content on the iOS device as well, which is mainly how I use my 64 GB Touch. All the music selection and control is through the Touch. Docks are for charging.

Sound quality of apple airport airplay etc. when compared to CD sound?

I've heard people say the Express is bit-perfect while the Apple TV converts everything to 48 KHz. Not an issue for me.
