Louisiana lawmakers hear case for legalizing medical, recreational marijuana

quote:

Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals Assistant Secretary Rochelle Head-Dunham enumerated the potential health pitfalls of using marijuana, citing studies she said show an increased risk for schizophrenia in adolescents and heart attacks in adults.

quote:

"Please think very carefully before you amend the current provisions," said Caddo Parish District Attorney Charles R. Scott. "You have to conclude that marijuana, that THC, has some very bad characteristics. We do not need in Louisiana our workforce to be impaired any further."

quote:

A fiscal note for Badon's 2013 legislation noted the state could save $1.6 million in the first year after the passage of such legislation. Savings would ramp up after that, with a total of $8.1 million in reduced incarceration costs predicted in subsequent years.

Doesn't look like things are going to change in LA for the near future. :freedom:

Nobody should be surprised this is being shot down. Louisiana will be the last state to legalize it

Translation: Lets keep charging poor people (mostly blacks) for smoking and selling weed filling up jails and tying up the legal system even though it's no more damaging than Alcohol, a drug that's celebrated in our state's culture.

quote:

The relationship of marijuana use with coronary heart disease, including prognosis among patients with coronary heart disease, is uncertain.

So am I reading this right? Someone with coronary heart disease would be increasing their risk of having a heart attack if they smoked?

So basically, what they're saying for us simple minded folk, basically, if you have a heart disease, smoking weed will increase the rate. What about if you don't have heart disease?

quote:

might lead to subtle but lasting neurobiological changes that can affect adult brain functions and behaviour.
