Not sure what the industry/marketplace term is for these, but basically want something that is portable and puts out some pretty good sound for outdoor tailgating, cookouts, etc.

Not looking for a little portable bluetooth thing like this:

But rather, something more durable and with bigger sound like:

Yall got any good suggestions? Trying to get ahead of the springtime crawfish boils, etc we're planning and shop for one of these now...

Obviously at minimum is an auxilary audio (headphone) input, but Bluetooth/USB/iPhone/iPod functionality would be a plus.

Anything I should give a look?

I'm on my 4th rechargeable PA system, and this is the first one I've had that isn't a piece of shite. It cost around $600, but it is very high quality. The others I've had were ION and Pyle Pro, and they were very cheaply constructed. I only used them indoors, and they still fell apart. We travel a lot for my kid's karate tournaments, and for his musical weapons routines we have to provide our own sound system. There are few around that are rechargeable and have decent volume. The Pyle Pros that are advertised as 600 or 800 watts don't have the volume that the Roland has, and it blows away those and the IONs in construction and durability. You can also get a really nice rolling travel bag for it.

This. Doesn't mind the beach and is cheaper than the Bose. I sold the Bose for one of these. What it lacks in "quality" it makes up for in longevity, durability and volume.

I'm thinking that's what matters to me most... only going to use it 5-10 times a year max, so I'd rather make a purchase big on economics than having the best sound.

Which versions/models you go with?

Other guy says Ion's fell apart for him... you didn't have any issues?

I'm in the $200 market not the $600 market :(

You get what you pay for. I thought I was getting away cheap with the others until I had to replace them every year. And that was for inside use.

I have the Ion Tailgater and recently got the Ion Explorer. Both are really nice and loud for the price. The only reason I got the Explorer is because the Tailgater only had a doc for the older iPhones. When I switched to the new iPhone it became a pain to use the aux cable and I couldn't charge my phone. The explorer is really nice because it's bluetooth. It says 75 foot range, but it's further than that. You can still charge your phone too, and they sell them at Sams.

We've had both models. I dont recall the names..but we had the pre-bluetooth one that was like an icechest with wheels and the handle. Now we have the bluetooth thats a "carry around".

Both have their advantages. The carry one straps to the top of a igloo wheelie (Im OT poor, no K2 or Yeti) icechest. Both play at the tailgate fine, and both are fine at the beach. Sam's was the cheapest price.

Here's a warning. The drunker you get, the louder you'll want. After 2 years at the tailgate with ours, it was relegated to the beach and I bought $3000 worth of QSC powered speakers. On the upside, I started a DJ business when not at TD Village.

+ 11tybillion.

The first generations (white ones) were terrible because the docks broke almost immediately. I used the Aux input. The second gen black ones were just as bad but added radio. The bluetooth ones just have a USB dock to charge with your cable.

Oh, and yeah, vs the Bose, it has a radio if you don't play your ipod/phone.

The dock mainly. Once it broke you couldn't charge and had to use the Aux inputs.

With bluetooth, thats no longer an issue.

The batteries are easy as pie to change when they finally die. Sealed lead acid, Batteries +.

I have that ion in your pic. I use it for tailgates. Works good and battery last forever. Sound quality past 1/2 could use improvement. $150 at Sams club.

One of my friends has something else. It's like a shop type speaker that runs off of power tool type batteries. I forget the brand of the speaker, but it sounded better than my speaker. More expensive though and you have to buy the batteries separate. I can't think of the damn brand name, but I'm pretty sure it's a tool type company. Will post if I remember.
