Dusting off some old vinyl today and have Green Thoughts on. How underrated is this band? I saw them once after their peak and they were fantastic. Who are the new artists that are similar?

One of my favorite bands ever. I still listen to Green Thoughts, Especially For You, Live at the Ritz and 11 all the time. I can't really think of any new artists that are similar, though.

"A Girl Like You" is one of the defining songs of the late late '80s/early '90s for me. Every time I hear the song it transports me back to that time period. Good memories.

They seemed to be pretty respected back in the day along with The Replacements, Plim Souls, REM, etc. I think part of the issue is that their sound didn't age well and they stuck around too long.

My two favorites by them:

"A Girl Like You"

"Blood and Roses"

I would argue precisely the opposite. I was around in the late '80s and I barely remember even hearing about them. They were never close to REM's level of notoriety -- even the IRS REM -- or even The Replacements really. But their music, which I only heard later, has held up.

I'm not saying they were immensely popular like REM but pretty respected in the rock world as partial founders of the college rock scene.

Their old tunes have definitely held up, but, for Christsakes, they appeared on a Gordon's Jewelry cd sampler later on in their career.

One of my favorite bands from the 80's. "Especially For You" and "Green Thoughts" are a great combo.

Their '99 album "God Save the Smithereens" is pretty underrated and worth checking out if you liked their first 2 albums. I picked it up at a used CD shop years after its release, and have really enjoyed it.

When the band was on hiatus in the 2000's, Pat Dinizio toured the country playing "living room concerts." You could hire him to play in your house or backyard!

I really like them. Great band whose closest current comp is... I don't know... Fountains of Wayne?

As much as I like the song, Sick of Seattle did bother me a bit. I mean, no band from NYC should ever complain about another city getting too much attention for its music scene. Sorry there was brief 2-3 year period in which NYC wasn't the center of the universe.

You were around in the late 50's. :rimshot:

Songs off Green Thoughts & 11 got plenty of airtime on the Pop and Rock stations in Houston in the late 80's. Over here I think they were about as popular as REM with IRS. I think they're a great band.

Bought Especially For You when it came out and damn near wore the grooves off the LP. Behind The Wall of Sleep was my favorite cut.
