Best Way to Approach 4-Wheeler Purchase

I've recently started to get more into hunting and fishing, and I've got land that you really need a 4-wheeler to get around. I'm unfamiliar with the best way to go about getting one, so I thought y'all might be of some help. Should I look for a used one on craigslist or is that too much of a gamble? Is it the kind of thing you should only buy new? Any and all input is appreciated. Thanks

brookhaven honda, approach with a visa or MC, they don't take AMEX.

Try Louisiana Sportsman classifieds. Some good deals in there. An ATV will run forever with proper maintenance

There is a risk in buying anything used. Especially something that is primarily used off road. If you buy used try and find one that hasnt been accessorized. I personally suggest new if you can afford it. Depending on size needed but im sure most will recommend a Honda Rancher or Foreman. Now all you have to do is shop around for best price

IMO if you buy used, buy from an old man that had stock tires on it. That way you know all he did was putt around and not beat it up. Of course check to see if it was maintained. ALMOST everytime I see buy something like a dirtbike, ATV, SXS, used; THEY REGRET IT...
If you shop used ATV's smart, you can come out on top. So many people using ATV's strickly for mud riding these day, that really wears them out.

if you buy used, make sure you get one that's bone stock

If it has a snorkel and big tires, you probably need to run not walk away. Old geezers with stock everything is the best way to buy a used 4 wheeler. Best bet is to buy new. If not, there is a laundry list of things to look for.

Do your research and you can find some great deals. Like Feliciana Tiger said, stay away from anything that has been accessorized, big mud tires, snorkels, etc. Check the hours and mileage and make sure they aren't excessive. You want one that was used for hunting or on some old man's property, not one that kids have ragged out in mud holes. Check for wear on the grips and foot pegs. Excessive use will show there. You have to take your time and be careful with a purchase like this. Armor all can make a bike look almost new....for a while.

Rust. Look for it. Check the crank case. I would not buy an ATV without a blessing from an ATV mechanic. Driveshafts and 4WD fixes are expensive.

Brookhaven Honda is the right answer. I bought a rincon late in the year (2012) for the same price as a rancher. Great ride, can ride two with comfort, lots of power. I love it.

I've got a 2000 model rancher for sale. Low miles too. Only 14k and some change.

Friend bought a used that was run hard from a guy that said it wouldn't start but didn't smoke . Has spent more fixing the smoking sob than he would buying a new one. Don't need a big one, I have a new Honda 250 Recon does everything I need for hunting. If you have a farm or are hauling trees out of the woods you may want something with a little more arse.
Have had my old 200 roll over on me 3 times it was light enough. I could kick it off. Big ATV 's gonna hurt you.

I'd buy new simply because I would know what the history of it was in doing so. A properly maintained four wheeler can last 20 years, without question.

Now is good time to buy as you might be able to get a brand new 13. I would suggest buying new and buying honda. For the prices people ask for used I would rather pay a little more for no risk.
Also check out great river honda in natchez.
